FYI. I bought the 2200i last week and did a LOT of research on break-in procedures, which ranged from “put in oil and run for 20 hours” to “put oil in spark plug hole. Put full synthetic and change after 15 minutes; repeat 10 times” It is quite the gamut of opinion, most not supported by anything more than hearsay and feelings.
What I distilled from all of it and based on my own experience was the following procedure I followed.
1. Fill with oil (it takes 14 oz) and let run for 1 hour on eco with no load.
2. Change oil. I poured it into a Pyrex measuring cup so I could visually inspect it, and the oil was quite dark with lots of tiny “sparkles” suspended in the oil. Some were metal and some were aerated bubbles.
3. Refill with oil. I used the Honda oil 12oz container filled up to 1/4” of the top which I measured to be 14 ounces.
4. Run for second hour. Again with no load initially on Eco. I added a small fan about 20 minutes in and occasionally turned Eco off.
5. Drain oil after second hour into another Pyrex measuring cup. The oil this time was MUCH cleaner and a golden color.
6. I filled up with oil a third time and ran for another hour, this time adding a larger load and switching Eco on an off periodically. I used the original fan drawing 50watts and added a 1875 watt blow dryer that I cycled heat on/off.
7. After the third hour I turned the fuel off and let the carb run empty and put it away. I left the oil in and will change in 17 hours when the generator has 20 hours on it.

To me this seems a reasonable balance between due diligence and OEM recommendations without getting OCD.

Hi Jim, I own Two Honda EU 2000 generators, one I converted to run on propane, the other was purchased already set up for propane. What is nice about propane is that it can be stored indefinitely. I also can run one generator on a standard 20pound propane tank for barbecue grills for more than 16 hours. I primarily use the generator to run my home hot water heating system in winter and a small window Air Conditioner in summer. I installed a small single purpose transfer switch to plug in my generator and disconnect the standard house power to operate the heating system alone.

It's nice to have back up power. I have a Yamaha and it's been a very good unit. I'm glad you have a little preparedness Jim.

Jim, you forgot to break it in. Run one hour on idle with nothing plugged in, then change oil. You will notice shavings in the oil. Drain oil and fill it back up with oil and then run it at 30% load for five minutes. Turn off. Let it set for 30 minutes turn it back on run 60% load And run that for five minutes then turn off again then after that run 90 % load for five minutes and change oil after that then refill oil after five hours and then it will be broke in. You’re leaving a lot out Jim be careful! 😉

I enjoyed your presentation. Just wondering what and how many things can you run on that particular unit?

Nice video, Jim. Have the exact same unit that I purchased over the summer in anticipation of the next storm. Well, we have a major Nor'Easter bearing down on Metropolitan area right now and I came here to get a quick refresher on how to get it up and running. I too have a larger generator with an interlock switch to power the entire house but that thing is so loud and requires a lot more effort to get it going. Keep up the good work.

Just picked one up. Did you "break-in" the unit? Some people say to run it on eco for 1 hour, then do an oil change. Then another hour, then another oil change.

Hi Sir! What is the oil did you pour first? Thank you

Mine brand new out of the box took 8 pulls to turn on. Runs fine in eco mode, but jitters a lot in regular mode. Wonder why?

I have the previous version and it pretty much runs all I need for a power outage . I wish it had a fuel shutoff as it's a pain to drain. Jim I have 2 five gallon jugs of fuel on standby good for 10 days and the Honda automatically draws fuel from the big gas containers and I never run out of fuel, just need the long run gas cap and some fuel line. Great Genset bud you will get many dependable years out of it.

How do you store fuel, and how long does it last?

The 2200i has two 120 outlets. If wired correctly they will power both banks of a breaker box. With this set up all house circuits could be powered. Of course the 240 breakers for large appliances such as clothes dryer or electric range should be turned off.
My question is could this set up be used to power a 3/4 hp motor which is optionally wired internally to run on 240?
