It’s also important to a state that it empties its energy quicker than an fmj round. That energy can lead to rupturing of nearby organs and blood vessels. Think of the difference between throwing a round rock into water and then throwing a flat rock of roughly similar weight into water. The flat rock will probably make a bigger splash and displace more water. The body works roughly similarly.

For those who wants to know if it slows down the bullet in air, it doesn't slows it that much. Because air gets stuck in the hollow part and creates a barrier and makes the bullet act like it's shape is like a infrared missile. Like a cylinder that has a small bulge at the tip.

Remember kids!

The most important reason to use hollow points is to avoid over-penetration which can harm someone behind them or in another room.

The fact the bullet either doesn’t go through, or doesn’t go through with hardly any energy left is hugely important because it means it dumped all of its energy into the target, leading to significantly more trauma and shock to the flesh around the bullet wound, and not limiting the damage to the bullet wound itself

They were designed to ensure the bullet stops in the target, and doesn't go through to hurt someone on the other side. Pretty simple. Turns out that designing it to lose all of it's kinetic energy at around 12" in depth, means that unlike in the past where 80% of the kinetic energy just exited the target; the target incurs more damage.

It's a byproduct trying to get the round to stop in the target, not a goal of causing more damage.

It also stops over penetration which limits collateral damage

Edit: it’s funny how everyone says he said that but I just wanted to see how many likes I would get if I just copy and pasted it. Thanks for the likes though

Hollowpoint is great for most self defense situations because you need to consider your backdrop. If my bullet goes through an attacker, it can hit someone or something behind my attacker that i dont want it to hit.

The thermodynamics of a bullet is quite fun to learn about.
