Normally the butt is the same flex as the fly line, not the same diameter. If you can ram a pin up the line so there is a hollow in there, you can insert various diameters, to get the one that flexes with the line. For instance, 23 thou is 50% stiffer than 20 thou. That means it can open up the loop a lot. 20 thou is probably the most common butt for the range of 6-8 weight lines. In classic Mason Hard that is 16 pound!

I once built a fly rod on 6 foot spinning blank. 6 foot rods are a lot of fun and were a thing back a while. I purchased the blank for a spinning rod. But I tried it out with some snake guides first. It was a great little fly rod, cast an 8 weight like a gun. It was marked as an ultralight. There were two classes, the really light UL, I forget but 1/32 oz and 1 pound up; and this one was the next size up, 2-4 pound lines comes to mind, forget the lure weight. Wow! An 8 weight, salmon, bonefish, light tarpon, bass is just an ultralight rod! I always keep that in mind when fishing them.

Thanks for the info, I am going to try your leaders out, and see what I learn.

Alvin, signed up and can’t wait. I think I actually might be able to make the live class, but will absolutely study the recording. I felt compelled to support you after all the time and effort you have put into helping share your knowledge of fly fishing. Plus, you got style my man

Fantastic as usual. I fish salt water and I normal just us the surgeon's knot for every adding length to my butt section of a store bought leader. But I'm going to start to learn that blood knot. Thanks

For a sinking line I’m curious why would wouldn’t just use Fluro for a leader as it sinks also.. I’m fairly new to the fly fishing side of bass fishing, just trying to learn the in and outs .. You have a lot of good info

Have you used leader rings to join the taper to the tippet? I really like them for trout and wonder if they are suitable for heavier bass leaders?

Simple and effective!
Thanks for sharing.
Shouldn't we take in consideration the stiffness of the mono instead of the diameter and breaking strenght??!!

Do you ever use a micro barrel swivel going to your tippet section to help with line twist?
Love the channel! Was happy to find a channel that’s focused on bass on the fly
