Finding Notes On The Guitar Neck Using Octaves (Guitar Lesson IM-116) How to play IF Stage 1

In this guitar lesson I will show you a cool way to work out the notes all over the guitar neck using octave shapes. All you need to know is the notes on the bottom (thickest) two strings, which you should know if you did the beginners course!).

Find the related course notes on the following link:

This is part of Justin's Intermediate Guitar Method, Foundation. A series of lessons available free online!

It's nearly all 100% free and card details are not needed to register. You have everything to gain, and nothing to lose! My theory course is the best on the web (and one of the very few paid parts of the site) and it's awesome - if your theory is lacking and you wanna fix it - that's the place to go! At my store, you'll find a huge range of super cool guitar themed t-shirts, all my (paper) books, merch and lots more 🙂 and we got proper fun backing tracks for you to jam along with too!

Awsome lesson! This makes it so simple to work out the other notes. Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication to helping those of us who are lost.

If you have trouble with octave 2, just think of it like a "C chord shape', but without the middle finger. Make a C chord and you'll see that your first finger is on the C note, as well as your third finger. Just translate that to any other position (like your third finger on the 5th fret of the 5th string, which is the D note) and the relation will stay the same.

This has always been the most frustrating thing for me! Knowing where the notes are or "learning the fretboard"! This is a GREAT way to make that MUCH EASIER!! Thanks for the tip!!
Any tricks for memorizing the 2 E strings that'll make THAT easier???

you can also find the octave for roots on the d and g strings by skipping 3 frets on the b and e respectively

Thanks for this helpful video. A good thing to use, too, are guitar flash cards - to avoid thinking. :-) I used guitar flash cards, and tested myself every day with the cards - that worked best for me. With each card, you see a note and then test yourself - the diagram/answer is on the other side of the card. Learning the notes with cards, and then seeing the same notes in a guitar arrangement was the way I learned the fretboard. (I play classical, mostly.) Your videos are very helpful, too!

Hiya Justin. I think this is my first ever comment on any of your videos. I've had a hard time trying to remember the notes on the strings on fretboard until a few weeks ago when I came across this particular video in your list of lessons. By following your method of using octave shapes, I've finally been able name different octaves of the same note all over the fretboard. I think the only octave shape I still have to try to manage is octave shape 3 since it goes backwards down the strings. Thanks for another easy to follow video.

Probably old news for some but, the easiest way for me to find notes on the fretboard is to use BAGED. The notes on will always fall in that order on the strings. For example if you are on the C note of the B string (first Fret) and want to find the next C note it will be on the A string then the G then the E then the D and repeat. It will be in that order 2 frets up unless you cross the B string. Crossing the B string will make it 3 frets up.

I guess it's obvious, but for Octave 4, any note we play on the 6th string, can also be found on the 1st - would that be Octave 4.1? :)
