Maybe it's obvious to some but I was confused for a quick second. Rule 1 refers to the G and B STRINGS. Rule 2 refers to F and B NOTES.

I keep my guitars by my bedside. So when I wake up, I can see the fretboard right away & I can grab them to practice. Soon as I wake up, I look at a guitar & read off the notes on the 6th & 5th strings, to make it second nature memory ~ To let it sink in. Then, I close my eyes & think in my head, A String: 3 is C, 5 is D, 7 is E, 9 is F# & so on. Then I think about the E string & I go, “3 is G, 5 is A, 7 is B, 9 is C# & so on. I learned it in a couple of weeks. I only got overwhelmed when I tried to learn all the strings at on e. Then, I came across a teacher who said learning the 6th & 5th strings are the most important, because those two are where most blues, rock & pop are played. That was very encouraging. I’m proud to have learned the E & A strings this year, 2023. It was an important New Year’s resolution. ❤️😁

I am glad I seen this video because it was another technique into finding my notes. I am practicing octaves, string pairs, the minus 5 trick, learning each fret by major note, and now this. The Battle have helped me a lot. Thank you. Keep these gem videos shining.

This is terrific. I'm using this with my guitar students and I actually made an assignment out of it where they have to fill in the information on a blank guitar fretboard.

Just my experience of 50 yrs bass and 6 string, I recognize 2 frets (whole step) down and 2 strings down always gives you the octave from root. In the course of finding an octave you pass to the B or high E string you add 1 fret (half step) and you land on the octave. Helps me navigate the neck to this day.

for years people kept yammering at me about the circle of 5ths. I could see how it helped make sense of key signatures but just couldn't get it to make sense on the fretboard. Now I know why. My brain works in patterns and you are the only one who has ever explained the patterns in a way that makes sense.

You are the best... The most concise, genuine method with clear explanation I ever found to navigate the fretboard with confidence. It's amazing.

For those who are confused about his rules, it's a vertical navigation trick from top to bottom following his mnemonic one after another within a cycle:

R1) G to B = +1 refer to the 3rd to 2nd STRING move following the mnemonic
R2) F to B = +1 refer to his mnemonic cycle to start over again
R3) is the combination of R1 and R2

Very well done! I've played from tabs but never learrned the notes. Son is taking lessons and I've asked him how he finds notes because it makes ZERO sense. This finally helped - thank you!!! To those saying you went too fast, I only had to rewind it once, so it was well laid out. Appreciate it.
