When you see jewellery, do you see the ornaments or the gold?
Christine Lambie presents Shankara's analogy of the gold and ornaments.
The 8th century non-dualist philosopher Shankara often used analogies. One great example is that of gold ornaments.
When we interact with people, we can see everyone as very different. People have different appearances (necklace), different natures (bracelet), different qualities (brooch). But when you melt the ornaments down, they are all pure gold.
After all, the goldsmith weighs out the gold – he doesn't take much interest in the shapes.
So here's a way to think of people – in their essence, they are gold at heart, however differently shaped the exteriors are. It's one infinite consciousness shining in all names and forms.
For the source reference, see Adi Shankara's commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, Ch12, v 3.
The School of Philosophy and Economic Science offers courses in practical philosophy and economics with justice as well as other subjects. It aims to approach philosophy in a practical way, encouraging students to apply philosophy in their lives. The School also introduces a mindfulness-type exercise leading eventually to mantra meditation.
