How to Crochet: Foundation Single Crochet (FSC)

How to make the Foundation Single Crochet stitch - a great way to start a project without having to crochet into a long chain! Once you've got the fsc row made, then you just work into the row as you normally would for Row 2 (for sc, just ch1, turn, and start crocheting).

Thank you! When I do a search for how to crochet or knit a specific method, when the hits come up, I look for the ones with the shortest video. Nothing makes me back out faster than having the demonstrator waste time telling me I need yarn, a crochet hook/knitting needle, darning needle, etc., etc. I greatly appreciate those tutorials which get to the point, such as yours did!

I have to tell you, I have been watching many many videos to teach me this foundation SC start. Each time I give up, do a ch and then sc into that chain. YOU, my friend, have FINALLY taught this to me. I think the biggest difference is you went into the 2nd chain from the hook but only had ONE leg on that first fsc. That made all the difference for me to finally SEE the sc I was creating and the sc. Then doing stitch two, three, four...made more sense.

So I thank you! I had already subscribed but ran into this tutorial randomly and BOY am I glad I did! Thank you!

I’ve been a crocheter for decades — usually nothing fancy, but I like trying new techniques.

I’m in the early stages of dementia and find learning new things to be much more difficult than in the past.

The first time I tried to do the technique you demonstrate here, I was hopelessly lost. It didn’t make sense to me. I put it aside, sure that I could never master it.

I came back to it, tried again, and still couldn’t do it. Do note that your instructions were not the problem — I could do the steps and make the stitch, but could not repeat it without re-reading the directions with each succeeding stitch.

So I put the work down and came back to it the next day.

And BAM, it made sense. My hands fell into the rhythm of it, and I can see the logic in each step.

Thank you so muchfor this. I have watched perhaps a dozen videos on this. And yours is the only one that takes it slowly and step-by-step and is close enough to the camera to actually see it. I'm watching it on my television so the others are always very quick and they aren't close enough. You did a great job now I've got to find out if you've done the double crochet foundation chain.
