Crews in Richmond, Virginia, on Tuesday opened a second time capsule that was found beneath a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Virginia Governor Ralph Northam said Monday the time capsule appears to be the one historians believe was placed under the statue on October 27, 1887. The first capsule was discovered earlier this month.

I don't mean to judge, but here in Italy we often see on TV archeologists handling ancient things and let me tell you: these two ladies look way, way too rough.

Is it just me or does this process not look so scientific? Looks like what my buddies and I would do if we found it.

This is definitely not Pro. Pro would have taken weeks if not months. Not to mention someone couldn't get a babysitter so had to bring the child along.

Why is the Smithsonian not in charge of this. The way these women are looking for their 15mins of fame is disgusting. Kid just there up close no one cares what he’s doing. No clean room to make sure all is okay. Gosh this circus is incredibly stupid.

Wow, what is going on here? These people are clearly not qualified to recover and preserve these artifacts.

These delicate pieces of history weren't opened by professionals at all and may have been damaged by the people handling this treasure!

My training and experience in working with national landmarks and conservation and restoration of these valuable reminders of our past had me cringing at this amateur recovery operation. It clearly shows this woman is appointed to her position and not deserving to lead this operation. She is impolite as well. The lack of proper equipment and lighting really shows the level of amateurish attention to detail. Using that steel plaster blade was butchery!

The unboxing could have been better and longer .

Seems unprofessional to me...should have dried box of contents first, each artifact professionally and accurately photographed in situ, remaining contents professionally photographed after each piece removed, etc.

Why was this opened so soon? It’s been barely a day since it was buried

If it was embedded in the base of a statue, they knew there would come a time when Americans would insist the statue be taken down.

Regardless of association, it's a major American historical find. So no one GAF about this..? Obviously not, by the care taken with it. This was a taken care of as thoughtfully and professionally as a bunch of 8 year-olds building a tree house. wtf!!! Embarrassing, disappointing, and amateurish. This is cringeworthy at best. "Without damaging the box any more than we have to". That was said AFTER they cut the whole side out. This whole thing made me sick. It was like watching a archeological team digging a site with a sledge hammer and bull dozer. "COME ON, FOLKS! WE HAVE TO GET ALL OF THESE HISTORICAL ITEMS OUT OF THIS TIME CAPSULE IN 10 MINUTE!!! LET'S MOVE PEOPLE!!! I HAVE SOME RERUNS AND LEFTOVER'S TO GET HOME TO!!!

the “researchers” (who, keep in mind, were happily participating in the physical destruction of historical artifacts) came across historical artifacts and feigned delight at their discovery like nobody would catch the contradiction.
“Yay, I just destroyed a 134-year-old monument! But ooooh, I just uncovered an old newspaper clipping! I’m a good historian!”

Maybe if you people watched the full thing they already had an idea and expectations as to what was inside of both capsules, they were expecting a pile of “soup” meaning everything would just be mixed with tons of water in the box and essentially destroyed, but everything was in much much better condition, they also explained that everything was stuck together because of the water, which required more rough handling than they wanted to do, also all they’re doing is opening a time capsule of items not worth millions of dollars, and are less than 200 years old, this isn’t some 5, 000 year old time capsule found underneath an ancient Egyptian pyramid, they also explained their nervousness,

This is what happens when barbarians take over … they destroy statues and then allow supermarket cashiers freedom to ravage historic artifacts … this is sad

VERY unprofessional - I'm shocked this was not given to a national Museum to do.

They need to show us the books, I bet one of them is the original account of the story that inspired the John Carter books, detailing the Confederacy experiences with space aliens

They did the best they could, with what most thet knew and with they had available to them, at the time! Props to them to even think of putting things away, for generations to come, to find. And props to those who discovered them!
