A team at a conservation lab in Virginia unveiled a time capsule found where the statue of Robert E. Lee once stood, containing Confederate memorabilia and a rare photo of Abraham Lincoln in his coffin.

Why was the statue removed? I'm in Ireland and haven't heard about this. I don't agree with what happened in world war 2 but I don't pretend it didn't happen, we learn from our history, why is it being erased????

as a british person, what i find very amusing and very funny, is that you yanks are treating this like its old, and historic. lol. when i think about this, then i realise the town i live in, in the uk, is 10 THOUSAND years old. and is one of the oldest settlements known (it was a settlement before it became a named village in 1069, but they found the remains of huts (we would call it a hamlet) dating back to 10.000BC in the area. although it was a couple of huts. (the area i live was all swamps, peat bogs and salt marshes, and a lot of it still is to this day the romans drained a lot of it to stop the setantii tribe from raiding them from the swamps and then running back in, in 1AD, but the setantii, as primitive as they where had a port of sorts)

You got to wonder how many time capsules are sitting in all these pedestals and all these statues around the country, they should use x-ray photography to look at all of them, I know all won't have time capsules, but there has to be a dozen or two out there waiting to be found

My training and experience in working with national landmarks and conservation and restoration of these valuable reminders of our past had me cringing at this amateur recovery operation. It clearly shows this woman is appointed to her position and not deserving to lead this operation. She is impolite as well. The lack of proper equipment and lighting really shows the level of amateurish attention to detail. Using that steel plaster blade was butchery!
