you should retitle your video HOW TO MAKE AN AGLE GRINDER ATTACMENT THAT IS USELESS AND DANGEROUS number 1 cut of grinding wheels are to be used on the edge not on the face
SO HOW ARE PEOPLE SUPOSED TO BELIVE WHAT YOU SAY WHEN YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO USE A GRINDER PROPERLY AND THATS FINE IF YOU WANT TO ATTEMPT TO SHARPEN DRILL BITS THIS WAY ALL GOOD BUT DONT POST A VIDEO SAYING THIS IS HOW IT IS DONE WHEN IT IS NOT HOW TO SHARPEN DRILL BITS CORRECTLY AND YOU ARE SHOWING PEOPLE THE WRONG WAY TO DO IT ARE YOU GOING TO TAKE RESPONCABILITY IF SOMEONE IS INJURED WHEN THEI CUT OF GRINDING DISC FLYS APART AND TAKES THEIR EYE OUT OR WORSE STILL IS KILLED BY COPPIEING YOUR VIDEO

Very smart side grinding on a cutting disc. Even smarter to do it without a guard in place. Tune in next week for ancient methods of facial reconstruction surgery.

I can see only 2 problems:
1) it is very dangerous
2) the drill won't cut

Ah yes, the ancients passed this down through the millennia. Their electric power tool knowledge was immense.

As the drill cut through the metal after it had been sharpened, the metal coming off the drill bit were in small flakes. A properly sharpened drill will create two continuous curls of metal. I agree with the comments that what the video shows is both unsafe and ineffective. There has to be both rake and relief angles ground for the drill to be truly effective.I have been hand sharpening drills, between periods of sitting in my armchair, for over half a century.

Won't work. Won't create proper clearance angle behind cutting edge.

Using a a cut off wheel to grind is very dangerous alongside the lack of guards.

I'm a Scientific Instrument Maker by trade with secondary trade qualifications as fitter and first class machinist, and I can say this method will not work, is unsafe (downright dangerous actually, because it requires side grounding on a cutting disk). In particular it will not provide the required clearance angle behind the cutting edge or provide for other point angles if required. Careful observation of the drill after allegedly sharpening by this method shows a clearance angle which was not present immediately after grinding. I can only conclude the author is lying and actually ground the drill using an offhand grinding machine to provide a clearance angle after the alleged method was used. All in all I this video should be taken down as a dangerous inducement by an unqualified person for others to be severely injured. Do not use this method!

Take it to a wheel grinder and 'eyeball' it. My dad was a master machinist for 60+ years and this is the way he sharpened end mills, drills, knives, axes, lawnmower blades, etc. and they came out perfect.

This is BS. You are not creating any clearance from the cutting edge. The only way to sharpen a drill is to do it by hand on a small "off hand " grinding machine. Normally two wheels, one coarse, one fine.

I couldn't drill the hole for the bolt, because none of my bits were sharp enough

Do it on a bench grinder, start at the edge and turn the bit slightly whilst lifting the point or dropping the end to keep the rake angle.

Just use a bench grinder. You don’t need a fancy gauge and can simply eyeball the angle and get a sharp cutting edge. A self taught welder showed me this many years ago. I touch up drill bits all the time because in less than just 20 seconds I’ll have a bit like new.

This is NOT safe practice. The cutting disc is not meant to be used in this way. It might well shatter.

It's a good thing that people were doing the same thing in Ancient times.

How does this idea get the back clearance of the cutting edge? Also, those discs are NOT meant for pressure from that side. I wouldn't use this method

This method wouldn’t sharpen a drill bit unless the angle iron closest to the cutoff wheel was elevated about 5°

Ingenious 😊. Must take precautions as disk if shatters will cause grevious injury

In the field we don't come down off of the tower or a reactor to change out a dull drill. We grab the angle grinder and sharpen it and keep on working.
This method will work. It is not safe at all and does not produce perfect results but it does save an hour of downtime as opposed to sending your helper down off of whatever structure you're working on to go to tool room and get a new drill. Because we all know he's not going to go straight there and come straight back. He's going to go to the Porta can, then he's going to go get a drink of water, then he's going to go to the lunch tent and get a Snickers out of his box and check the messages on his phone while he's there, then he's got to take a break on every deck as he climbs back up to the top where you are working.
Wear a full face shield.

Why do so many people take the guard off angle grinders? Over the years I've seem a number of very serious injuries and one fatality caused by shattered discs when the grinder is used without a guard.
