Exactly what I needed. Crazy Microsoft doesn't mention this.

Microsoft is so brain dead when it comes to this stuff - win 11 Pro and they still can't fix their crap to "just work" like it should. This solution doesn't work for me either.

This didn't solve my issue. What did was going to Accounts > Sign-in options and turning OFF the option 'For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device (Recommended)'. This allows you to sign in using your email address password.

I was also having the credential problem with RDP on Windows 11 with a fresh install... Maybe it would have been fine if I'd done an upgrade.

This solution did not work for me, though it does seem to be on the right track. Is easy to try, maybe it'll work for others.

I managed to get remote desktop by switching the computer a local account login (instead of Microsoft Account). Remote desktop then worked. At this point I was able to go back to a Microsoft Account login and Remote Desktop is still ok.

For me, another thing that worked was 1) turning off Windows Hello under Accounts -> Sign-in options and 2) Rebooting the PC and on the sign-in menu, clicking Sign In options and logging in with my password.

Did not work for me. It reverts to no password. Still can't sign in.

Thank you for this! Insane that Microsoft didn't see this bug... but your solution worked. Appreciate you sharing!

Thank you! Even though Credential Manager showed I had a password assigned I retyped my password, saved it, and now I also have access to shared files!

This did not work for me, but it did give me an idea: What if supplying the correct password for my MS account under Generic Credentials isn't enough? What if there is something else that happens during a local login that will only get set if I actually log in locally with my MS password (as opposed to authenticator or PIN)? Well, for me, that ended up being the fix. Once I'd logged in locally with my password, remote connections worked fine.

Burned by the convenience of an authenticator app!

signing into both computers with a local account instead of network and using my microsoft password to setup the new local account password. Then using the ipv4 address of the other computer as the computer name in the remote connection worked for me. Note I allowed password sharing across devices and unchecked require network level authentication recommended and found that chat gpt was worthless at this query and youtube comments helped point me in the right direction.
