This reminded me of a Twitter thread I saw a year or two ago which showed that a number of companies had RDP on their Windows servers exposed to the outside Web.

I too used to do that for remote access to my main PC, but I now hide it behind a gateway device that I access on an uncommonly used port.

This is very common especially on WAN. People will simply brute force ANY open port on any address in hopes someone has done something stupid. I expose my SSH that only takes public keys, so personally, I’m not scared. The fail2ban package is absolutely fantastic though.

How did they find your Remote PC exactly? What did you mean when you said you opened it up to the internet?
Did hackers just do a general scan of the internet for IP addresses using port 3389?

I simply configure my routers firewall to externally use a port that isnt 3389 and block all packets except those from my mobile operators ip pool since i 99% use Remote Desktop from my phone over cellular network
