Every commercial jet engine plane uses this. The big fan blades you see in front is what is shown here on the left. There is a shaft that run through the center to drive. In the GE jets there is a gear down happening though the drive shaft. That allows the blades to not spin super sonic causing damage and the blades pitch is higher pulling more air, most of which bypasses the engine and provides thrust. Cool stuff.

This is basically strapping a wind turbine to the back of a normal jet engine 😂 which uses fuel

That disc at the end of the axial stages is more of a mixed flow impeller

Interesting fact about these free turbines: You can start the engine while literally holding the propeller, although you probably shouldn't.

The P&W PT6 was first put into production in 1958. I’m pretty sure it’s off patent. Why isn’t another manufacturer producing them for cheaper?
