Hi. Great video, if a bit tedious for you! My reading of your results is that the butt joint, if well made. is excellent and that if you need to use something to line up your boards *small* dowels are probably the answer. It seems to me that in most cases the boards are able to bend and the load gets distributed fairly evenly across the boards, but that the stiffness provided by the dowels prevents the centre section from bending as much and concentrates the stress at the end of the dowels. If so, smaller dowels would bend easier and produce a smaller stress concentration effect. Perhaps if th dowels were made of softer wood (pine?) they would be better? Once again - great video, thanks.
