Fun with Inktense Pencils on Fabric - Quilting Tips & Techniques

This video shows how to have some fun with Inktense pencils (by Derwent) on fabric, using water to activate the ink. The colours will be permanent once dry - they can be air dried or ironed dry. Great for creating your own designs on fabric. Imagine making some patches of your own design, or maybe you need a small amount of a particular colour. Have fun!

That looks so fun! I think 'll have my grandchildren design blocks and make them a quilt with their art. Thank you so much, that just opened up a whole new world of ideas!!

Inktense pencils are permanent when heat set to withstand repeated washings however, they have a fairly low light-fast rating which means that, over the life of the fabric, you should not put the items out in the sun to dry after washing. It is a good idea to make a solution of water and fixative (Sonjas' has a fabric fixative readily available) which will help it stand up over time. Clear pure aloe vera gel (not the green stuff) will also work with the added bonus of confining the ink to only over the gel. I've used these for years and have found mixed success with some colours still fading. I love them though and keep using them still. Dry your work naturally THEN heat set by pressing with a medium iron tends to give the best results. Placing the items into a tumble dryer doesn't produce the same result as a medium iron.

Just lovely 😊 I used to do Art Journaling but I’ve found my passion in Quilting. I have lots of art supplies (stamps, Sprays etc), including Inktense pencils. I’m so excited to try the pencils on my white fabric and make a charm pack, how fun! I think you ARE an artist. Love the bee 🤗 Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us. Oooohhhh the daisy looks lovely too. Lots of ideas now. Regards from The Blue Mountains in Sydney. 🤗

I have never used ink tense pencils but I like what you have done. This idea would make a wonderful wall art quilt. You could combine fabric pieces and ink drawing to make a sort of mural. I would like to make a quilt mural of an under the sea theme with lots of bright fish and coral and shells. Thank you for sparking my imagination.
