I see some debate here and there regarding the value of the Tesla Model S Plaid compared to the Model S Long Range. In the video I cover, should you buy the Tesla Model S Plaid or Model S Long Range? Enjoy!

I personally own the long range version. As a point of disclosure, I had the money to buy the Plaid if I so chose. But honestly, it just wasn’t worth it to me. The LR is fast enough for me as is. The Plaid is certainly faster. But for me it was past the point of diminishing returns. I have been so happy with my LR. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned.

The long range is significantly faster than model 3 performance past 60. 670hp, I’ve run 10.82 at the strip, yes has aluminum pedals on it as well. Body width is the same.

Good, practical video. Appreciate it. Had my Y Perf for a few months. Already saving for the S LR.

I've been considering this. I think there's that raw desire to have the best version of something that pulls at us to buy the plaid, but honestly I think as you said, and I'd go even further not only is it not really worth it for 98% of drivers, but probably a waste of money. I've never been on a track, and I'm not really sure I'm going to change that anytime soon, so I think the plaid is just unnecessary at that point. I never really liked the wood look inside cars myself, so the only thing that annoys me is since the plaid came out, they took out the carbon fiber option and made it plaid only.

Model S LR 1/4 mile is 10.7 at 128-130 which is already in league with many supercars. I have a '22 M3P right now and just drove the SLR today. I found it to be every bit as fun to drive as my 3P, with more luxury and space to stretch out. I loved it. I'll buy the S at some point in the near future but I'm not sure if I'll go for the Plaid or just get the LR. My M3P is still plenty fast to put a smile on my face every time I drive it, and it's already quicker than nearly everything on the road. I'm not taking it to a drag strip, I drive around town and the occasional short road trip.

This is such a well detailed video. We need more like this. We need unfiltered opinions from actual car owners, without them having to be held accountable for decisions people take (or the creators being afraid of being wrong to some extent). It’s a gd YouTube video for God’s sake, not a professional review.

Need a follow up on whether Plaid is worth the now $20K difference. Big improvement from $30K. And you can spend another $20K and get the carbon brake kit from Tesla, so that's a new factor too.

I have a Plaid but would rather just get the Long Range if I wasn't impatient. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere you really can't use that 1020 hp on city or suburban roads. You'll have to baby it if you're at stop lights because gapping everyone feels rude for how powerful it is

Thank you for the review! Are you able to compare the model s performance to the plaid?

Long range is listed at 670 HP.

Also tested at the track and it was in the higher 10s quarter mile from members on the Tmc forum

I have a Plaid now, but before I that I had a Model 3 Performance and the Model 3 was a little better around corners but the Plaid is also fairly good also around corners but in a straight line that Plaid is just euphoric and power distribution is nonstop compared to the Model 3 Performance which loses steam after around 80 mph

I have a 2022 MSLR and have ZERO regrets. The Plaid is certainly an awesome option, but 670 HP delivered with absolute instant torque is already ridiculously powerful and quicker than 99% of every other car on the road.

I've been in both. and yea the plaid is definitely faster! but is it worth it.. hmmm no not really. The cars pretty identical interior and exterior at this time. IF your down to poop down extra 40k then go nuts. Now if Tesla had tossed in the works with bigger and beefer brakes and some extra plaid interior features then yea..it would possibly justify in me buying a plaid for sure! but in this case no. I just got my Oct 2022 model S LR refresh..Refreshed! an im definitely satisfied!

model 3 performance is still slower than the model S base to the 1/4. The model S base can hit the quarter mile in less than 11sec consistently. The Model 3 performance has issue doing it in less than 11.5 or so. Still very fast but the base model S can hit it in 10.8 or 10.9

I do not care so much about the ultra fast speed of the Plaid but one key difference to me is that the Plaid does come with the awesome black carbon fiber interior while the Long Range S does not.

The new model s base today is $74, 990 vs. $89, 990 for the plaid, bringing the diff closer at 15k as they compete with other brands

I just bought the Plaid. Giving up my 3P. I would buy another 3P over the SLR at its more fun to drive. Can't imagine not getting the Plaid

Did you do the same tire swap as your model y? I'm about to follow your footsteps with the S. The wider tire suggestion for the Y saved my rims. Thanks Btw.
