It looks as though the captain of the crippled aircraft realised that his best chance was a landing attempt on the flat and open land close to Aktau airport. He and his heroic co-pilot damn near pulled it off : coming in too fast without flaps and any aerodynamic control, they simply couldn't level the wings or raise the nose in time. Can't imagine how they struggled to steer that plane for so long just using the delayed response from engine thrust.
I doubt that anyone gets trained for that scenario.

Is it possible for an aircraft hit by a missile in Grozny by Russian Air Defense to fly all this distance to kazakhstan? If the aircraft was hit by a missile over Grozny why didn't he announce it while communicating to ATC? As far as we are made to understand when an aircraft is hit by a missile it disintegrates soon. I am not an aviation expert but I can't fathom an aircraft hit by a missile over Grozny flying over an hour to reach the accident spot.

Uhmmm, your theory of anti-aircraft gun does NOT panned out. The bullet holes are from the top of the elevator and stabilzer [0.24] and not from the bottom [0:35] meant its been shootdown by fighter jet.
Beside, the pilot made an ERROR in landing the jet which was the wings to cartwheel on top of the fuselage with aviation fuel and fire to burn the fuselage instead of level flight with 5-7 degrees pitch up.

So the pilot went about his way.
