My little sister’s last horse when we were growing up was a retired parade Palomino who could do anything on command including rear indefinitely. She was nearly 5’ 4” and 110lbs soaking wet in all her clothes. The horse was a monster just shy of 20 hands and over 1700lbs. She had to vault to get on him, when you’re young you can do that. She rode him bare-back and bare-foot. They had a amazing relationship and were quite the sight...

It's a great source of pride in being physically able to step up onto such a large horse, truly. And after 33+ years as a trainer/exhibitor, I will attest that myself, and most trainers I know suffer pretty severe hip joint pain in the left hip joint from all that torque suffered over the years. Cool as that is, to preserve your health, and possibly avoid the hip replacement so many of my co-harts have received, use the mounting block. Once your up there, you still look just as fierce!

At 71 years of age, I use a mounting block, train my rides to stand still while I get on, and reward good behavior with treats.

My appaloosa was 16.2HH. I had a student who at age 12 was about 4'6 and had been partially paralyze either just prior to or shortly after she was born. I always taught my students not to use a step stool. She asked me if she could get on Mandi without my help. We were both so proud of her when after several attempts she was able to reach her goal. Her momma was so happy with that as well. You can do anything you set your mind to do. Thank for posting this video and bringing up that memory. Ride safe, lady.
