Dubai's Architectural Ethics

In the last 30 years, Dubai has had a massive transformation from a small fishing village, to one of the economic and business hubs of the world. Its population has grown by almost 600%, and it is now full of incredible structures like world record skyscrapers, incredible resorts and hotels, impressive mosques, and more. And what’s more impressive is that it still manages to be at the forefront of creating buildings that put an emphasis on sustainability. The city has a green certificate to maintain standards in sustainability, and promotes practices such as solar panels, recycled building materials, and much more. And yet at the same time there are a lot of ethical issues that go along with buildings in Dubai. One of the biggest elements is the fact that Dubai has a lousy track record when it comes to worker pay, worker safety, and general working conditions. The region as a whole is known to employ 30 million migrant workers, and it's estimated that around 10,000 die every year, often in ways that could have been prevented. Then there are the many cultural challenges, like how to build in a region that expects a certain level of assimilation to Muslim and Arab culture, without overdoing it, or not doing it respectfully enough. We’ll take a look at these ethical issues and more in this video, as we explore some of the amazing structures in the city. So join us as we go over the ethical aspects of building in Dubai!
