Every once in a while when the world seems particularly bleak, the chorus of this pops into my head.

I always felt this song nicely summed up the Gen X attitude of the time. "The world is ending and we're okay with it. Let's just dance."

I've loved this song for decades, first time I've ever seen the lyrics. Caught some passages here and there, but never knew all the lyrics, or had an understanding of the exact meaning of the song. I just jammed to it.

Mike Mills on backup vocals seals the deal. His extra “I feel fine…” before the third chorus, the whole “It’s time I had some time alone” part… his voice adds a whole layer of sweetness to the piece.

Try "Night Swimming." REM has a lot of really good songs, but that one is special.

R.E.M. had an amazing run of great albums from their debut EP all the way through Monster. I kind of got burnt out after that, but what a catalog.

If it makes you feel any better, REM did this song for an episode of MTV Unplugged (I think you two did a Nirvana song from their episode of Unplugged) and Michael Stipe had to have the lyrics printed up for this song - he couldn't remember them!

As a kid who was in college in the very early 90s, this song got played all the time, especially at parties. Lex is right about it being a reaction to the constant craziness of the world... Everyday is the end, but you just go with it and don't get too worked up.

LOL I love how this song produced some existential dread in Brad. The song is sardonic. So there you go, Brad. Sometimes it's the mood instead of the lyrics. There are a lot of references to basically taking marching orders from the state, but also a lot of pop culture references. Like Lenny Bruce - he was a pretty crass comedian who was banned from doing shows in a lot of locales across the US. So the "And I feel fine" is a kind of dark fatalistic response to the nonsense. But no super deep meaning beyond that. Early REM music especially was a lot more about the feel of the song than the lyrics themselves. So they're a bit like The Talking Heads that way. And then you get the next generation following in those footsteps, like Beck and Modest Mouse.

This was influenced by Bob Dylan and especially his song “Subterranean Homesick Blues” the way he sang it was a proto rap style.

That could be a great song to do a reaction too. The music video shows Dylan showing poster cards with the lyrics to the song in real time as the video plays, dropping each card as the song plays.

That would be a great song for you to react to Brad, and you won’t have to look for a lyric video since the original video has the lyrics in the video.

Lex: “you’re the lyrics guy!” 😂🤣

For me the 'message' of this song was always: it is what it is.

This is the brother from another mother to Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire, which was a round up of world events from his birth in the 50's until he wrote it, in 1989.

Brad, I think you nailed the point of the song: there's too much to keep up with.

97% of everyone who's heard this song at least 1, 000 times still know none of the lyrics other than the chorus and *LEONARD BERNSTEIN*

R.E.M. songs sometimes have a message, other times it's a random combination of words, or even a combination of the two in one song.

I'm a big R.E.M. fan and for me it's more about how their music and vocals make me feel. I like their lyrics, but they could be singing nonsense, and I'd still enjoy their songs.

Can't hear this song without thinking of the alien invasion of Oakey Oaks in Di$ney's "Chicken Little" =)

Great responses to this song! This one of my favorite all-time songs by one of my all-time favorite bands. Lex nailed it as usual. The songwriter (lead singer Michael Stipe) has explained that this song is actually about "embracing change" instead of acting like its the end of the world. Brad got it first when he noted that the song states it is the end of the world "as we know it" which is different than the end of the world. Lex took that insight and ran with it and totally nailed the song. It's the end of the world every day in some way and we got to just roll with that! YES!! I agree. People are always mis-characterizing this song as "apocalyptic" or something but you guys got it right. There are lots of great random non-sense lyrics in it (birthday party, cheesecake, jelly beans, boom!), but also lots of great moments of affirmation/clarity like when he declines all the alternatives or just affirms that he's "feelin' pretty psyched."

I love REM and I might be the only one saying this but “Stand” was one of my favorite songs of theirs
