Herb Alpert was a very big name back then. Hard to imagine in 2024, but the music landscape was so rich and open to all kinds of music in those days.

Fun fact:
Herb Alpert is the only artist in history to have a number 1 Billboard hit as both a vocalist, this song, and as an instrumentalist, "Rise" in 1979.

This is from a Herb Alpert TV special broadcast in 1968. Herb wasn't known as a singer but he was looking for a romantic song to sing on the show to his then-wife. He asked his friend the great songwriter Burt Bacharach if he had any songs lying around that he could use. Burt pulled this one out, though it was supposedly originally written from a female point of view. Herb liked it, figuring he could sing it in his range and also fit a trumpet solo in. Herb and Burt asked Burt's songwriting partner, Hal David, if he could change the lyric to a male perspective. Hal agreed. The song appeared on the special and was met with such a positive response that they had to release it as a single. It went straight to #1. In the following years many female singers took on the original version, including Bacharach & David's favorite singer, Dionne Warwick.

My first husband had me listen to this when it came out in 1968 (we married in 1970) while we were strolling a music store. He was headed for Vietnam and wanted me to know how he felt. 😥❤️

crying, I remember my mom playing this song and I don't think I have heard this in over 50 years. Thanks so much for the reaction (and the memories)

I am in shock! Thank you so much for reacting to this song. Long story, so here we go.

I went to high school in southern California in the mid 70's. There was a young lady in my class who I thought was absolutely gorgeous. She was very popular and nice to everyone. She and I became friends, but we never dated because I was so shy around her and thought she was way out of my league. I felt lucky enough just being her friend.

After we graduated, I joined the Army, but she and I stayed in touch by mail. Christmas cards, birthday cards, and letters talking about our lives and what we were doing. I still adored her from afar, but never told her. I was back in the United States when our 10-year reunion rolled around, and I went just hoping to see her again. And she was there! Both of us were single, and we sat together for the meal and festivities. After the evening was over, we went our separate ways and stopped communicating.

Twenty years later, our 30-year reunion was coming up, and some classmates started a group to stay in touch. Someone asked if anyone knew where my friend was, and I decided to look for her. The first phone call I made was to her house and we chatted like no time had passed. We communicated by phone and email for a few months, and I finally told her how much I truly liked her and always felt she was special to me. We agreed to meet in Arizona and spent a weekend together. By the time our reunion rolled around, we were a couple. One year after I contacted her, I proposed to her, and we got married twice. The first was a civil ceremony, and then we did a church wedding for our families and friends.

When we danced our first dance as a married couple, I picked this song to dance to. The lyrics were a reflection of my feelings towards her over all those years. She is truly the love of my life.

My mom loved Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass. He was mainly a trumpeter and bandleader. I enjoyed his music too. He was hugely successful and founded A&M records. 14 platinum and 15 gold records and a current net worth of $850 million.

Herb Alpert opened a recording empire with partner Jerry Moss and formed A&M Records in 1962 which was one of the most influential record labels until their eventual purchase and dissolving from 1989 to 1999 (becoming part of the conglomeration). A&M had such acts as Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, Burt Bacharach, Sérgio Mendes & Brasil ’66, Boyce & Hart, The Carpenters, Chris Montez, Captain and Tennille, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Quincy Jones, Stealers Wheel, Liza Minnelli, Rita Coolidge, Gino Vannelli, Wes Montgomery, Paul Desmond, Joan Baez, Billy Preston, Cat Stevens, Joe Cocker, Procol Harum, Humble Pie, Carole King, Cheech & Chong, Nazareth, The Tubes, Styx, Supertramp, Rick Wakeman, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Chuck Mangione, Squeeze, Peter Frampton, The Sex Pistols, Janet Jackson, the Police, Sting, the Brothers Johnson, the Go-Go's, Bryan Adams, Oingo Boingo, The Human League, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, and Joe Jackson. To say Herb Alpert was a huge musical influence is quite the understatement.

Released in 1968 and written by Burt Bacarach and Hal David. And sung beautifully by Herb.

In 1974 Herb married Lani Hall who, from1966 to 1971, was lead vocalist for Sérgio Mendes & Brasil 66. They remain married to this day, 50 years later. (Mendes died a couple of weeks ago.)

Thank you for reacting to this. Herb Alpert has been married to Lani Hall for 50+ years. In honor of the recent passing of Sergio Mendes, you should listen to Brazil 66's "Fool on the Hill" with Lani Hall as one of the lead singers.

Loved this music. I had Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass' Greatest Hits album. This was a rare hit with Herb Alpert singing. He had so many instrumentals hits such as "Spanish Flea", "Tijuana Taxi", "The Lonely Bull", "Zorba The Greek", "Magic Trumpet" & many others.

This brings back memories. Another Herb Alpert song I love is The Lonely Bull.

Burt Bacharach wrote this song along with Hal David. His mellowness balanced out the radical changes of the 1960s.
