This is my Terraria video where I go over my pre hardmode melee weapons tier list in terraria.

In this video I rank the top 5 melee weapons in terraria pre hardmode, and I go over a brief description on how to acquire them. We go over the strengths, weaknesses, and general uses. For me its:

I would suggest finding how high you can jump, and building a levitating building with the entrance directly on top of spawn, and made of wood platforms, which you can make at a work bench. You want NPCs to move in, and in order to do that you need viable housing. There is a housing query in the top right corner of your inventory. For a house to be viable, it needs to be big enough, have decent lighting, have a chair, talble(or workbench) and wall(you can make wall at a workbench using 1 wood to make 4 wall). Your gonna start with getting the Guide to move in. After him, the Merchant. There are certain qualifications you need to meet in order to get people to move in. For the guide, all you need is a viable house. For the merchant you need to have 1 gold in your inventory. You also need to be away from the housing area while NPCs are spawning, so take advantage of this time and go exploring, or make a hellevator. Use the hellevator to dig down and find ores and gems. You will get a blue message in the chat when an NPC arrives, and when they die. There are bosses and events. The first boss your gonna want to fight is the King Slime. You can summon him with a Slimmy crown. He can also spawn naturally through the event “raining slime” which you will get a message about when it occurs. The same is true for all bosses and events. Your world will either have gold or platinum. Depending on which one you have, your going to want to collect a lot of it and use it to make bars, and then a crown. You need to make a furnace in order to make bars. I can’t remember, but I think you just need lots of stone to make the furnace at a work bench. Use the bars to make a crown, then gather 50 gel from killing slimes and take that and the crown to a Demon Altar. You can find these by exploring caves and mining in underground caves. Only at a demon altar can you make a Slimy Crown. Make sure you have decent armor and weapons before you start this fight. Depending on what class you chose, your (recommended) weapons will vary. I will list my suggestions below.

Range: all I can think of is bow and arrows

Mage: wand of sparking, gem staff(amethyst, topaz sapphire, etc.)( remember to get Mana Crystals too. You can make these with 5 fallen stars.)

Melee: star fury(if you can reach and/or find it in sky island), boomerang

Summoner: squirrel staff, slime staff, imp staff(would not recommend only doing summoner bc the squirrel and slime staffs are extremely rare, and you need hellstone to make it, which is hard to acquire due to the difficulty of mining in the underworld)
