Teardown : Sony External HDD (HD-EG5)

My Sony HD-EG5 External HDD stopped working so I disassembled it and I found a Seagate 500gb 2.5" 5400rpm inside it.

Sony External hdd cost more than any other External hdd.
and inside it has a cheap Seagate (seagate have more annual failure rate) hdd which is died.

Update : I tried this hdd in my PC via SATA and found that it is working, but going to die very soon. I thing the SATA to USB 3.0 converter was defective in my case.

So i suggest if your External HDD is not working. Disassemble it and try it directly via SATA on PC.
Sometimes it may happen that your hdd is working but SATA to USB 3.0 converter is not working.

The usb to sata adaptor was failing so I extracted the hard disk and used another adaptor to save my data.

Not exactly, don't pry it open with a knife! Simply push the entire unit out of the case, it slides out easily, then remove the plastic caps by releasing the tabs on it's sides careful not to break it. And the magnetic protection film on the inside is supposed to be opened from the opposite side, lift the film and remove it careful not to tear it.

Bonjour. Ouvrir le boitier avec un couteau, je ne suis pas fan du tous. Les spatules en plastique ça existe. Prendre exemple sur Ashwin Kc dis en dessous. C'est comme cela que le boitier s'ouvre.

I have Sony an external hard drive, was OK for 5 month's. but after that, become useless, the connection between laptop and drive is suddenly disconnecting in between. I thought it is problem of connecting cable so I changed the USB cable and no result as well, the drive get connected and suddenly it loosing its contact with PC/ laptop. I tried to using different PC, but no result.
Please guide what to do.

Hey Chirag! After removing the adapter from the HDD (the small green board from the actual (seagate) hard drive, is it the 2.5" HDD? Can I use it as my laptop internal hard drive? Because, the ports on the seagate drive looks like it will fit in laptop's SATA port. Please advise.

will you be able to reassemble the external hdd because my hdd's port got suck inside and i wanted to fix but i dont know if i can reassemble it after disassembling the hdd using your method and fixing the problem.
