Russia-Ukraine conflict: 'Give peace a chance,' UN chief implores as Putin orders military operation

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting Wednesday evening as rumours swirled that a Russian invasion of Ukraine was underway.

Secretary General António Guterres opened the meeting with a impassioned plea to Russian President Vladimir Putin. "If indeed an invasion is being prepared I only have one thing to say from the bottom of my heart: President Putin stop your troops from attacking Ukraine. Give peace a chance," the UN chief said.

As Guterres delivered his speech at the UN, Putin was giving a televised speech himself, ordering a “special military operation” in eastern Ukraine, telling the West not to intervene in what appeared to be the beginning of war in Europe.
