Donald Trump urged Republicans to force America into an unprecedented default if President Biden did not make huge spending cuts, during a wide-ranging town hall when he doubled down on hardline positions in a pitch for the party’s 2024 nomination.

Trump delighted his core supporters and outraged his CNN hosts by refusing to consider any new gun controls, celebrating the end of national access to abortion, insisting the 2020 election was rigged against him and pledging to pardon most of the rioters jailed for attacking the US Capitol.

He called E Jean Carroll, the woman he was found liable this week of sexually assaulting and defaming, a “wack job”; he summed up his plan to reduce inflation as “drill, baby, drill”; and when the host of the televised event pinned him down over retaining secret documents he called her a “nasty person”.
