"As losses get towards the million mark, which they will on present trends, by the end of the year, that has to have some effect."

Putin is "running out of time" to make gains over summer as Russian losses continue to rise in their grinding push in Ukraine, Defence Analyst Prof. Michael Clarke tells Kate Gerbeau on Frontline.

I do wish you wouldn't begin with an excerpt that is later repeated.

Thank you both again for keeping this in the forefront as much as possible. As an American, I’m baffled that our country won’t give Ukraine everything it needs to win this war.
The U.S. didn’t want to get into WW1 and WW2 because we didn’t want to send our sons to die in a foreign land. I’m afraid by not ensuring Ukraine throws Russia out of its country, we are dooming our children to the real cost of war: death on a battlefield.

I like how Russia's 'peace plan' is effectively, 'accept the invasion'.

They might be losses that Putin doesn't care about, but they are someone's sons, brothers, and fathers. I've seen some of the gravesites of these "careless casualties" and find it incredibly sad that the country they fought for has so little gratitude for their sacrifice.

I would love to watch a debate
between prof Michael Clarke and prof John Mearsheimer & prof Jeffery Sachs.
Who both say the Russian losses are 50000/60000.

We're still talking about signing an agreement with a terrorist state that violated two prior agreements when they started this war and rewarding that terrorist state with Ukrainian land...right?

I really like the painting hanging on the wall behind Michael, the blue of the sky and golden yellow of the ground

Can't say I agree with the intro much... Putin doesn't care about the numbers... It's not like the Russian public even HAVE those numbers... And the "disquiet" is just as muted as it ever was... Especially as long as he can avoid drafts and use people from outside the country, it's all gravy for him!

AS LONG AS UKRAINE CAN FIGHT IN UNEXPECTED WAYS AND ADAPTING AS NEEDTED AND ON THE MOVE, IMPROVISEING AS NEEDTED, OVERCOME WHAT EVER PUTIN AND RUSSIAN MILITARY TRY TO DO TO THEM.

How could his losses be greater than the number of troops he has mobilised?

Seems like a huge figure, 1 million, so what are the losses on the Ukrainian side??

Ukraine themselves now say they are losing 1800 troops per day. Falling apart now Russians have broken through the fortifications

Odds on it, if Mr Putin could go back to early 2022 I seriously doubt he would have done what he did . This has evolved into an absolute disaster for Russia . Never underestimate the resolve and determination of your enemy .

The second half of the interview is absolutely brilliant. The Western Democracies must really appreciate what we we need to do to help Ukraine and why it fundamentally matters

"We're hoping to deal with this as a crisis that doesn't inconvenience us too much..." This is the great curse of representative democracy.

Yes Russia has been losing and losing now for 2 years and Still Ukraine has just lost more and more ground. Makes total logical sense.
