Today’s topic is ADHD and low self-esteem.
Why do many people with ADHD have low self-esteem?

Going through their whole life struggling and constantly being misunderstood and criticized, many people with ADHD started to lose their self-confidence, believing that they are not good enough, not smart enough.

Looking at people around them, they often feel so behind in their own lives in many areas: academics, career, relationships…Comparing themselves to others just make them feel more defeated and discouraged.

In this video, I will share with you how ADHD hurts your self-esteem and ways to overcome it.

"Others try to compensate for the lack of self confidence by being an over achiever, doing everything as perfect as possible so they won't be percieved as being a failure others." I felt that with my whole soul 😭💀

And it doesn't help when your bluntly told by your mother that you can't do anything right and have never been able to do anything right. And insulting and demeaning when you can do something right.

I still remember when I was 7ish maybe younger, the day I overheard my mom yelling at my dad upstairs that I may never learn. I think that was when I lost all care. And I'll never forget the night after my dad moved out I tried to finally explain all the things going through my head and how I was scared of everything all the time and she just cried for hours. I get it now as an adult that she's just a human too but yeah I think that was the moment I was taught that I'm not worthy of help.

when i was in 7th grade i struggled a lot with executive function and struggled in school. i made a lot of careless mistakes in my work and i didn’t really pay attention. my parents would yell at me saying i was doing it on purpose and i was hurting them instead of helping me.

You have described my 45 years on this planet! I struggle everyday with all these issues and try so very hard to remind myself that it isn't me. Just wish I had been diagnosed or aware of ADHD issues early in life as it has caused me to make terrible mistakes, choices and decisions that are so deeply ingrained now it is a struggle to pick life from ADHD symptoms. I was diagnosed at 44 years old and have a lot of work and self forgiveness to get
through to get better. Love to all my fellow ADHDers out there, God bless us and make us stronger.

Finding your super powers in Adhd like hyperfocus can really help to boost self esteem. At the same time noting and replacing negative self talk with compassion for yourself makes a huge difference.

I started to write a comment.. this is literally describing me. And then I noticed we all share this feeling. I find it hard to open up, even write a comment. The fact that you're reading this is a big thank you to all of you and the maker of this superb video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻.

"Get help from others" is always a major part of the equation, but adults with these problems often have been whittled down to literally no companions by the time they understand what's going on. Such as myself. It's always super disheartening to hear how important other people are when there are none around, and won't be. The schizophrenic nature of "rely on others" and "heal yourself" doesn't leave me feeling like I have any answers I can use. I can't heal alone, but I can't hope to find a companion until I've healed.

"Is there anything you could relate to in this video...?" are u kidding me, I'm literally (as in the correct use of 'literally') crying, it's like u are describing my whole life. The parts about relationships and comparing to others are overwhelmingly spot on, almost too much to handle. So to answer your question: yes.

This was a wonderful video as at 45/46 male I am discovering though therapy and my doctors that I’m most likely ADHD and even (DSM5 level 1) Autistic (old Asperger’s) this realisation and watching these videos and reading books has helped me with my therapist to genuinely find myself. Yup not very good at relationships, and have always felt different and apart from my contemporaries.
I have always been bad at written tests and at school I always seemed to be so slow at exams but still got fairly good grades. I was always told I was a dreamer and quiet but was very bright and great at problem solving and puzzles. Yet because of standardised testing I found myself in the bottom set of maths and English yet was told that if I applied myself I’d do well yet I struggle with mental arithmetic and have always had yet when I found algebra and calculus was quite happy. In the mid 1980’s was found to have dyslexia (I say mild but it is) and my traits are I have problems with spelling and handwriting. B and D reversal but put me infront of a computer and I can write war and peace.
I got A’s in English but teachers said “so how can I have dyslexia “
Your just not very good at English.

I can read, write, just about do mental arithmetic but I’m studying for a degree in planetary science, did well in electronics, physics, chemistry and at college studied electrical engineering but it was hard as I would drift off and I do at work which is a whole other level of difficult.
And way thanks again for a great video.

Such good content. It's so good to know that there a people like me. But it hurts so much. It takes every bit of my energy to even begin to think of how much my people are suffering from

The most sad part about this is people really think your lazy and not trying hard enough when you actually gave your best! Then when you actually pushed your mind and limit to actually get it right then they will say your inconsistent and you'll never be somebody

Sometimes this is a good thing because I’m always striving to be better! I’m always going to the gym because I want to be better, look less fat, and be happier. I have to fight to be happy and I’m okay with that

I saw a lot of myself in this video. Maybe it is from years of low self esteem but I find it very hard to think of my own strengths as an individual. How have others come around this?

I may be out of my job now and I'm way too scared to pursue my goals for being a mechanic. I hate that I didn't pay attention through school for auto despite how many auto courses I took. 😥

So many great points, so true about people with ADHD thinking they are not good enough and having low self confidence. Great video :)

Is anyone else so sick and tired of the crap people say about “not living up to your potential?” Maybe everyone has different potential. Just because someone doesn’t up in the same place in life at certain ages doesn’t mean they haven’t met their potential. That’s like telling someone who can never walk that they fell short of their potential because they don’t get around like others on two legs!! This is deeply insulting. Your potential is the best that you can realistically be in your own life. Not what others expect or think you should be doing.
