The Cheka was a Soviet secret police organization established after the Russian Revolution of 1917, whose name comes from the Russian acronym for "All-Russian Extraordinary Commission for Combating Counter-Revolution and Sabotage." The Cheka was created to ensure the stability of the Bolshevik regime and the defense of communist ideals, and its primary mission was to monitor and punish counter-revolutionary activities.
The Cheka's activities were highly controversial: they carried out arrests, torture, and executions without open trials, and countless political opponents and "enemies" died at their hands. These heavy-handed and sometimes brutal methods went some way to establishing the Soviet Union's early internal security, but they also led to widespread human rights violations and political repression. In 1922, the Cheka was reorganized into the GPU (State Political Bureau), which can be seen as the first version of the Soviet secret police organization that would eventually lead to the KGB.
