Why Are There No Saber-Toothed Cats Alive Nowadays?

There have been several saber-toothed cats in the Earth’s history, but none is alive today. Except for the very earliest forms, they were all related to the felids but had features that were largely dissimilar from today’s big cats. Most notably, they had short, stumpy tails, a thick, stocky build and of course their characteristic and unique, elongated canine teeth. Here, we discuss the characteristics of saber-toothed cats and suggest what may have happened to them and why they became extinct.

I think it's due to more of the pantherines extreme level of adaptability because whereas lions and tigers can range from being bulky and robust to compact and slender built, most of the last smilodontini were extremely bulky with no range in build and unlike bears, who were omnivorous and could use their stamina to make up for their lack of agility, had no way of existing in a world of fast and nimble prey

Given how smilodon were bulky and had short tails weren’t ideal for chasing prey, which is why they would ambush potential prey. Plus given their two long teeth were prone to breaking if the large prey smilodon went after fought back hard.

Clouded leopards are sort of similar to prehistoric cats the fangs of those leopards are long and used for stabbing🦴🦴.

That's too bad that they're extinct I wish they were alive again I guess couldn't have compete with other more adaptable big cats

Diseases such as Rabies, Mange, Distemper would have been serious threats to endangered animals even back then..

Animals with sabers as teeth were around for at least dozens of millions of years. Felines, like smilodon, perfected using them though. But despite it being around for so long, it was almost an evolutionary flaw. They looked scary but they were quite fragile and could break easily. If it were to break, the animals would have a much harder time hunting and would probably die. But it was more of a success than it was a failure which is why it was around for so long. I think I read somewhere that some experts believe that Sabers could come back one day

Another problem could be that the saber teeth limitad what parts of its kill it could eat, making them starve faster than most other carnivores.

Just to help out with future videos don’t put that old film filter on everything and stop with such an upward inflection when you talk

I like this documentary because the narrator pronounces this extinct animal as Sabertooth Cats instead of Sabertooth tiger. When some documentaries call it a Sabertooth tiger is inaccurate and irritates me to absolutely no end… Because of course it bothers me. 😬 I could have done without the weird enthusiastic whatever at the end but still it was better than what I’ve previously seen.

most animals that survived the ice age are usually a lot more adaptive. its why mountain lions are still around. saber toothed cats where ust to specialized to survive a sudden change in climate and prey availability. things like cougars and leopards have a massive range of prey species based on location.
