I wish sabers were still alive. Such a fascinating animal.

agreed. saber toothed cats where an interesting and probably awesome looking. those giant teeth would not have been a great adaptation and was probably one of the groups downfall. because they where so specialized they would have had a hard time adapting to the change of climate when the glacial period ended. and being so easy to break a good amount of individuals probably died because they could not hunt anymore after breaking one of the canines

Smilodon was obviously stronger. I haven’t watched yet, but Smilodon was built like a bear and he succeeded because he wrestled animals

If we are talking about pure brute strength? Smilodon is probably the strongest cat that ever lived. Especially in the largest species Smilodon Populator, which recent finds have put the weight estimates up to nearly 1000lbs.

This channel should be appreciated atleast for the very attractive content for animal lovers even if the information used is sometimes inaccurate and outdated

I think the key/clue in this debate is that despite both animal's larger Ice Age forms being extinct, the post Ice Age Tigers never went on to develop the long canines again, meaning nature and genetics recognised that as a weakness and mistake from the past, whereas the Lions have remained pretty much unchanged apart from being relatively smaller.

It is good opinion but, I believe, you don't give enough credit to the grappling abilities of the sabretooth cat. One of the reasons scientists believe sabretooth cats lived in groups was a large number of sabretooth cats had survived and thrived after suffering severely crippling injuries that would have prevented the sabretooth cat from hunting. This indicates this crippled cats would had to had assistance to survive the injures. (These injuries would also might be a good reason for the animals to hang around the edges of tar pits, as well as pit falls, where struggling and injured prey animals might be in the more shallow areas of the tar "lake.") The theory being the sabretooth cat pride might have dragged the deceased animals or body parts to the disabled cats allowing them to recovered. Modern lions skeletons also show individuals surviving severe injuries but not getting that quality of care required to give similarly injured lions. It is possible sabretooth cats with extremely severe injuries were able to stay close enough to hunting grounds, given the extreme size of sabretooth prey, crippled cats could have dragged themselves to killed prey items before competing species were allowed near enough to snatch pieces of the hunted corpses. Since Smilodon cats did not have the protective sheaths for their saberteeth that other saber-type animals had, the fragility of the saberteeth maybe over rated. The teeth in living animals certainly could have been much stronger than fossilized skeletons indicated. Strangely enough the fact that their were skeletons of Smilodon cats showing at least some of the animals survived for a long time after one of the saberteeth was broken proving that not only was the unbroken tooth not extremely fragile but the broken tooth was still effected as well as the extreme grappling ability of the cat.

A very difficult fight to assess as both cats are huge & fierce & both became extinct around 11, 000 yrs ago. Smilodon has the strength advantage & Panthera atrox has the agility advantage. This would be like a stocky in-fighter (e.g. Joe Frazier) vs a rangy, out-boxer (e.g. Ali). I’ll call it a draw. Interestingly, I wonder how each would have done against the slightly smaller, contemporary Homotherium (simitar-toothed cat)? Many thanx for the fab vid.

The lion is larger, but the smilodon is more like a wrestler.

Fun fact: the saber tooth is closer to the lion than to the tiger genetically

The lion would give a tough fight, but would eventually lose. The Pantherinae may be the strongest subfamily of cats as of now, but back then, no one could challenge the Machairodontinae, the extinct subfamily of big cats. These guys were muscular and bulkier than most predators of that time.

American Lion would win. But I'm sure that Lion will have some severe damage by the Saber-Toothed Tiger.

Fun fact = According to Dr Larisa desantis who works in the la Brea tar pits in her interview in evolution soup she has said that American lion were solitary. Also she has said that American lion were less dominant in North America compared to dire wolf and Smilodon Fatalis.
