Debian 'Bookworm' 12 Preview

Debian 12 Release Candidates have begin to arrive so, I wanted to take a look and see how much different it is over Debian 11, and all I can say is its amazing. On an Intel 12th gen its so much faster than Debian 11 I thought at first something was wrong. Even after installing flatpak support, the flatpaks were faster, in some cases faster than the package versions.

I am not benchmarking this yet, I will waiting under it is officially released, I just don't think that is fair to the developers and testers to do that before they have had a chance to signoff on it.

Yes, once again I used AI to generate a cartoonish 3D bookworm for this video, for me its just a place to explore and have a little fun.

I noticed that installing from the Debian 12 RC KDE live ISO sets Plasma Wayland as default. Interesting.

Unless I'm mistaken Debian 12 will also ship with Pipewire as it's default audio.

I'm running it on a 8-GB RAM Core i5 from 2007 Lenovo Thinkpad T61) from a partition on a 500-GB solid state drive. It's working great for the Nextcloud server it's hosting.

This is exciting news. A new Debian Stable is always cause for celebration!
I recently ran into a big chunky file server in a live production environment rocking Debian 7.. Yeah. that's been running for awhile. Zero complaints too, it's had no issues anybody could remember. Fascinating story, I love seeing things like that.

I am a fan of Debian, although I prefer to run (K)ubuntu point releases due to having a more up to date Plasma. Also, I don't like how Debian packages Plasma (why on earth do they include Konqueror?).

Debian was my first distribution. I have a soft spot for it. Put myself through the installer several times, did btrfs, added some useful BSD derived tools. Cozy place to be.

Might spend some time in Bookworm on a bare metal install. Looks about ready according to testimonies.

Been running debian 12 bookworm for about 6 months. Sooo much better than 11. Moving to bookworm and keeping my updates current has actually fixed a lot of capabilities that I have that are oddball. Things like digital signatures from a CAC reader in Okular... I had issues in 11 with refresh rates in x11, and lock issues in kde and wayland. All that has gone away with SID/Bookworm...

9:48 Yes 5.27 is the last LTS before KDE 6 so it is great - XFCE 4.20 is not coming up in next 2 years so we are good

9;51 KDE 5.27 is the LTS release and the last release of Plasma 5 family. KDE team hopes to release Plasma 6 before the end of the year.

Just upgraded from Deb 11 to 12...so far, all good, the only issue being I had to re-enable GRUB's OS prober. On my Ryzen 5 2600 Deb 12 seems a little a slower than Deb 11 but as I upgraded in situ, the distro has been through a lot and things might need to settle down.

I like your overview of Debian but as a long time subscriber I could not concentrate on the video, as my eyes were stuck on your t-shirt! And this is not the first time. While I might don't agree with your taste in in Desktop Environments ;-) I'm quite gobsmacked in your choice of wardrobe. Amazing! To all geeks, watch and learn at least learn what to Ware ;-)

On the expert install they ask specifically whether you want non-free-firmware and non-free in the sources.list 8:28
