Sequential Numbering in Excel with the ROW function by Chris Menard

Adding sequential numbering to rows in Excel is easy. I'll show three methods for numbering rows. My favorite method is using the ROW Function in Excel. One advantage of numbering rows is a printed copy or PDF is easy to follow and reference.

Automatically numbering in Excel can also be done with cell A2 being the number 1 and cell A3 being A2+1. Still, the row function is best to use. If you insert a row using A2+1 the numbering will be off.

=ROW()-1 as an Example.

Let's say in a table, there are marks of students scored by them in a test and the list is made in descending order of the scores. Against each score (marks), the number of people who scored the same marks is given in the next column. What is required is to make a full list of students giving them a serial number. That means, for a score of 90, if there are 4 students, you will have 4 rows containing the same score of 90 with serial numbers 1 to 4, and then for a score of 89, if there are 6 students, the serial number progresses with the subsequent number, i.e., from 5 onwards till 10 with scores 89. Kindly let me know how to automate this process using a formula. Thank you.
