Yours is a 1956 dated rifle

Your serial is НВ3046 (I think) with the “Д” character afterwards. That last character indicates the year

Д = 1956
И = 1957
К = 1958 (last year of production)

I have an unissued Yugo w/ arsenal log book, a shooter Yugo, a Norinco import, and two very early Chinese military SKS's but dragged my feet too long on getting a Russian, now the prices on them are crazy.
I wonder if anyone in the US has a 1945 SKS, I have to imagine those would be incredibly rare but supposedly some saw use at the very end of the war.

Thanks! My SKS must be a late production. It has no markings on the cover, but it has a star on the left side of the receiver, like yours. I have wondered why it doesn't have markings on the cover.
And there is a weird thing about it. Not one number matches the gun, it's a complete mismatch. But the rifle and all it's parts has the exact same patina and wear. I wonder how this happened? Maybe some of the last SKS rifles was put together from parts?

Earlier production guns often will be missing the dust cover.
And I've actually come across Chinese SKS that have the original Russian dust covers on them, and of course the cheap reproduction Russian dust covers on them.

Mine is like the one on the right. Its a "letter gun. " mine has a K after the serial number. Others like yours has the russian symbol and. There is one more. One thing i read is that officially production ended in 54 i think. But when they were in the process of transferring production to china they cranked out some more maybe to check the equipment. Mine is arsenal refurb with a force matched 1954 stock. The square with a line is the arsenal that did the refurb

I've read that the last sks's with the star on the side of the receiver were made in 1955-1956 and are referred to as "letter series". I have one with the star on the side of the receiver and a letter D after the serial number. The D is in Cyrillic and looks like a space invader. It's gonna suck surrendering it if the Canadian Govt passes bill c-21. Fingers crossed the bill flops.
