How to fix Black Screen of Death - HP laptop

This video shows step by step process on how to fix the dreaded Black Screen of Death on your HP Laptop. This appears to be a common problem on the internet forums. The symptoms are that lap top will not show any activity on the blank screen, yet the fan and some of the led's on the keyboard blink and light up. Fixing this problem saved me from having to buy a new laptop computer, and also saved me lots of money.... ;-) best of Luck

Hey man, I never comment on youtube, but you've earned it! My Hp Dv7 4190us laptop couldn't post on BIOS. After your "1 hour charging advice" was taken, the thing was brought back to life! You are really a lifesaver, thanks a lot! Regards from Brazil

Thanks for taking the time to put this up here. Frankly, I'm always a little impressed by the altruism of folks like you willing to juggle a camera even in the midst of diagnosis of some electronic or mechanical repair. I'm usually too swept up in the task at hand to bother. My trusty older little 14" HP Pavilion g4-1016dx has been up to the same black screen tricks for some time. On advice found elsewhere, I'd been just letting it sit with the black screen and battery in, then rebooting after an hour or three with the power button, having heard this pause in the black could somehow sort of jump-start its elderly little internal CMOS battery weakened with age. And mostly it's worked with some patience. I hadn't heard that the main battery in place somehow diverts power from the internal CMOS one, but I'm giving it a whirl in the black without that external battery in place now. Even if it doesn't pan out, I still appreciate your taking the time to put your advice up here.

Leaving the battery out for an hour didn't work, bit leaving the battery out for six hours and leaving the laptop on worked great. Thank you for sharing this video with the world, it certainly fixed mine.

I'm glad this method worked out for a lot of people. I looked into this issue because my neighbor's HP had the same problem. To clarify, this has nothing to do with the Bios battery not charging, in fact the Bios battery is not a rechargeable battery. This is an issue with the motherboard, a problem that results from poor soldering from the manufacturer. Essentially what you're doing with this method is a "reflow" of the motherboard chips. You can hear the fans going full blast after a few minutes of running it with the battery off, this happens because it is overheating. That overheating has the ability to reflow the soldering on the motherboard. This method won't work for everyone because some may have other motherboard issues. I'm disappointed in HP and unfortunately its not the first time I've been disappointed in HP. I'd stay away from HP products.

Thanks for this video. Removing the battery, leaving the power on and charging it for over an hour fixed the frozen black screen on my HP Pavilion dv6.
