Thanks so much for watching! Taking a little break from tornadoes.. After that massive solar storm earlier this May, I got inspired lol.. Also I've been out chasing! Crazy story, an EF2 tornado came within 3 miles of where I record these videos a few weeks back. It was the closest tornado to that location in like 70 years! Mega tornado vid coming soon!

Electricity dude here: most western powergrids these days have a lot of protective equipment. Power companies and governments are aware of the extreme consequences a large blackout could have. Specifically we have overvoltage protection at all substations, if the voltage rises due to GICs, the lines will be disconnected in a split second. The voltage of GICs is not large enough to bridge the disconnector gaps. You have plug-and-play spare transformers at every major substation. Also, in basically every apartment block or industrial warehouse you have to install overvoltage modules that will short to ground in case of a lightning strike or geomagnetic storm. A carrington event today would just knock out power for a day IF you hAve these protective devices in your system. I bet that for example India or mexico with their birds-nest improv distribution on wooden poles would see a LOT of damage though. Invest in protection ;)

The sun should really stop sneezing in our general direction. It is very rude. 🙁

I watched the Aurora from here in MN, and it was breathtaking—no exaggeration. I was speechless and struggled to find the words to describe what I witnessed, even with the naked eye. These were the first Northern Lights I've ever seen, and now they are ruined for me. Nothing that came after that first night even touched the magnificence and majesty of that first night.

You've got me hopeful, Swegle! I'm eagerly awaiting my next chance to watch the lights dance with that intensity again.

I like to imagine the earths atmosphere as a person hunched over with their hands on their knees breathing heavy while saying “that was a bad one” every miaki event

I have binged like half of your videos in the last few days so this came at the best time. I must say I find it very admirable that you are able to handle topics with danger and death so classily and informatively. Props to you man you gained a forever subscriber

The video game “The Long Dark” is one of my favorite video games and it’s a survival game where sometime between 2010-today a carrington event happened and the aftermath is known as “the Quiet Apocalypse” and you have to survive in Canada during the middle of the winter after surviving a plane crash. That game really got me interested into the Aurora Borealis and ever since I found out about it I’ve been following aurora forecasts waiting to see one as far south as I did. I was so excited when that big one hit us earlier this month.

That aurora this year was so beautiful. Even if we get a blackout, at least we'll be able to see the auroras without light pollution. Looking on the bright side 💞

Jake, your storm videos are absolutely amazing! I subscribed to you just to see you break down storms like solar storms and especially tornadoes. You are the GOAT when it comes to this and I get so thrilled whenever you post a video.

That geomagnetic storm was insane on May 10. I was actually out storm chasing that week and ended up seeing it while in Texas. My family back at home got great picture of it overhead like much of the Midwest did but it was still incredible seeing it near Killeen, TX

You said it yourself, storms like the May 2024 event are rare. Everybody is talking about this happening again soon, but it’s still pretty unlikely. Two major events in two months would be monumentally rare.

During the May 2024 storms I was flying my Cessna 172 and Memphis center had some trouble contacting planes due to the storm. I was being used as basically a node to send instruction to other planes, and eventually I lost contact with Memphis and other planes would tell me instructions. Really creative solution.

I will just say this, your video quality, editing quality, the script-writing, even the display behind you.. wow.. you improve so much so quickly, it's rare to see - like a true pro maneuvering towards great success. Your content is so watchable, many science networks wish they could produce something like that
