The "will it start the car" was a nice test But what about opening the doors? There is like a 3 foot range for it to recognize if a key is close enough to auto unlock. I wonder if you put it near the back of the car, someone could just open the trunk.

Great use of the container and neo magnet used in this example. To help eliminate all possible transponder signals, the fob can be wrapped with tinfoil. Some have suggested removing the battery also.

Depending on the car, if you get a copy of the key made (assuming you still use a key) it will just unlock the doors, but not start the engine. Hiding a copy on the outside of the car might be a better option. Also, if you're worried about a cheap spice container holding your key or transponder, Nalgene makes small, half-liter water bottles that are guaranteed waterproof. Or you could do a Pelican case.
