Sky News gains unprecedented access to the RAF pilots responsible for protecting Britain's skies from terrorist threats.

Ready to respond at a moment's notice, the Quick Reaction Alert crews based at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire, fly Eurofighter Typhoon jets.

They are armed with short and medium range missiles, and are ready to shoot down hostile aircraft as soon as they receive the command.

Coming from a family with a lot of military history in it, I have the utmost respect for Her Majesty’s Air Force. One of the world’s finest aerial combat forces. Serving their Queen, defending their country. A rich and proud lineage. God bless the RAF.

I know its off topic, but Eurofighter Typhoons are amazing. Elegant, and a tad understated but very very capable.

These guys are absolute heroes, the best of the best. Every time these amazing fighter planes and their brave pilots go up, they put their lives on the line for our safety. Most of the time it is all in a day's work for them, intercepting a passenger plane or other commercial aircraft where the pilot has forgotten to change bands and contact air traffic control, in this case the fighter will make contact and instruct the pilot that he needs to phone home, once contact is established, he flies off letting the jet go on it's way. They never know what they're going up to though, or if they're going to come back to the ground safely.
