great explanation. thanks. right now I'm studying navigation. to add more accuracy you might need more calculation such as adding drift, variation and deviation as you can't trust the compass course. but this still could bring someone home.

Its 010 not 10. Its not a bearing of 180 its a Magnetic course. A bearing is an angle to an object. Courses should be recored on a chart as 010 M (M for magnetic).

Say you woke up on a boat and you have no idea how you got there or where the boat even is. This method won't work since you have no initial starting point or previous point of reference, right? So would you have to rely on the stars in that case?
