I use my cell phone to navigate with when I go ashore on my dinghy. I start by marking my boats location with a way point. That way if the fog rolls or it get dark I can get close enough to find the boat. Just remember that the boat can swing 50-150ft with the wind and currents. P.S. Also keep a compass on the dingy and take a bearing before leaving.

Excellent presentation on using a smartphone for marine navigation! Safety considerations were well-covered. Just like with any other moving vehicle, do not concentrate on using your smartphone while at the helm of a moving vessel.
