This backfired in Germanwings Flight 9525. The doors were designed to withstand any blows on it. This prevented the chief pilot to open it even with a hammer and save it from a suicidal co-pilot who locked it from the inside.

Most plane hijackings were basically hostage situations. In a lot of them the hijacker would land the plane, make their demands, and then if they got what they had asked for they would have the plane take off again and land somewhere else where they’d attempt a get away. Suicidal terrorists really weren’t that common when it came to plane hijackings. In fact the US government had vague intel that terrorists were planning to take some kind of plane around the time of 9/11, and it was assumed that they wanted a military aircraft. Some Air Force bases were on alert on 9/11, only to then get the news that it wasn’t military planes that the terrorists were after.
