I remembered that manual. Two childhood friends of mine had that game on the NES and for the longest time I wondered "Is Mario insane? Is he aware that these bricks were people?"

*"Mama Mia, are they all going to be THAT talkative?!"*

Really had me for a ride I did not expect him to have known this entire time

You know, i’m surprised that you guys haven’t made this joke a LOT sooner about the whole toads turned to bricks thing

I love Dorkly's continued jokes about Mario’s insanity.

People always forget that in page 8 of that same manual it is said that "If you come across mushrooms who have been turned into bricks or turned invisible, they reward you by giving you a power boost."

"One day, the kingdom of the peaceful Mushroom People was invaded by Koopa, a tribe of turtles famous for their black magic. The calm and peaceful Mushroom People were turned into stones, bricks, and even bushes, and the Mushroom Kingdom decayed."

All of the paragraph is apparently on the third page of the official and original cassette of Super Mario Bros

Why I miss old school game manuals that would give you some lore you wouldn't get otherwise.

The instruction manual *SPECIFICALLY* says it’s the Unbreakable blocks that were Toads and that the points were their thanks

"You've just blocked...." - Chris Pratt, probably

Nintendo stated that the blocks the Toads were transformed are just the one with stuff in it. And... believable: think about, beside the power-up being a "way" for the fallen Toads to help Mario in his quest, the idea that the coins replenish health or gives extra life could mean they are like souls...

Also, in all the games set in the past there are no brick blocks.... just saying...

Mario knowing it the whole time is awesome.

Honestly this just makes me feel a hell of a lot better after the week I've had

If you also go further, it states that if you come across them, they would give you a reward. Everybody forgets that part.

This is one of the best jokes in the original game. But to be completely honest for a moment, the same manual later says that the people turned into bricks are those who give you some reward and that they are grateful to have been found. The bricks you break are just normal bricks.

I remember reading that booklet when I was five and the game just came out. Any time I broke a brick I got upset, but I never considered hitting the question blocks as killing the people because they still existed as a stone. I took it that they were were either stones that was given magic, or that those stones were of powerful people(or those who practice "white" magic) who were able to give out a gift because of what they were before.

The second I saw the thumbnail, I already knew it was going to be about the manual.

So the secret wasn't that the Toads got turned onto blocks, but that Mario knew that the blocks were alive and enjoyed killing them. Huh, neat.🤨

The ones you can destroy are not the former mushroom people. They were only the ones you cant break. The bricks are no longer mushroom people after the first game, it seems. Since you can turn all bricks to coins in some games
