Dirty MAP sensor problems can lead to rough running often with P0106 code. Easy DIY fix. AKA boost sensor cleaning
#mapsensor #boostsensor #map

Suffering a poor idle or generally rough running? EML on? reading code P0106/7/8?? This indicates a problem with MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure). All cars suffer from getting the MAP sensor dirty to a greater or lesser extent (especially diesel) and this causes inaccurate reading which leads to poor fuelling and poor running. MAP sensors can be pricey so always worth giving them a clean first, see if that cures the problem. It'll take less than half an hour and cost virtually nothing.

Some people refer to the MAP sensor as a "boost sensor". In this instance a boost sensor is a MAP sensor. The only difference is that on a forced induction engine, the MAP (boost) sensor needs to be able to read the amount of boost so will need at least a 2bar range. On a normally asperated engine the MAP only needs a 1bar range, since it never needs to measure anything higher than atmospheric (barometric) pressure. HTH.

The important thing is that after years I learned, what work does the crankshaft sensor do, the most important thing is the explanation you gave! Thanks for tutorial.

Hi, petroleum jelly can degrade rubber O rings. Silicone grease or plumbers grease will not harm the rubber.

As recommended I watched this video after the one for turbo charger cleaning. Thanks!

Great tip Cyd, on the Saab, it's so easy that I will now do it as yearly maintenance, thanks. The only suggestion I have is to use silicone grease instead of petroleum jelly as that might deteriorate the seal.

i do recommend using an electrical cleaner or actual MAP sensor cleaner as the equipment is very delicate and needs to be left with no residue. break cleaner or Carb cleaner is a bit risky. (good video though mate and happens to be on the same engine as mine)

Brake cleaner has solvents that can degrade plastic and rubber. After some time the bonds in plastic polymers brake and it forms cracks.

This is more commonly found in boosted engines. However, some Honda’s and other makes did include map sensors as opposed to maf sensors for a number of years. A faulty MAF or MAP sensor will cause rough/uneven idling, poor engine response, acceleration, fuel economy, and trouble starting up.

First, you help so many people and it seems from so many parts of the world. It’s really cool, a new kind of British empire, but that crazy language you speak. Al-u-min-e-um I think is some kind of metal. Second, thanks for helping me and my “lovely” Saab. Steve, CINCINNATI Ohio USA.

I'll try it for my Saab 9-3.
Merry Christmas!
Thanks.

Different manufacturers have different ingredients for their brake cleaner/throttle cleaner. For example, a cheap china brand throttle cleaner contains methylene chloride that are known to cause severe chemical attack on many type of plastics. However, other factor such as temperature, concentration and exposure time also plays a role on how the chemical will react with the plastic parts. I think using brake cleaner to clean MAP sensor can damage the sensor, but since nobody cleans their MAP sensor everyday, it would probably be a relatively safe method. But the risk is always there and you never know when will you get unlucky.

Do not use carborator cleaner to clean electronic item. it is very harmful. carborator cleaner is only for cleaning dirt on to the metalic items. Do not directly apply on rubber, plastic, paint, and electronic circuits. thanks.

Thank you! I don't have MAF cleaning spray or contact cleaning spray on hand --- could I use rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) in a spritzer bottle and then let the MAP sensor dry out before reinstalling it? Please advise... Much appreciated...
