The Phrygian Mode | How It's Used In Songs

The Phrygian mode (and Phrygian Dominant) give songs a dark, tense, and mysterious feel. Artists like Björk, Muse, and others have used these patterns to create some hauntingly cool stuff.

In this video, I explain how these scales form chords and progressions -- and we look at some examples in popular music -- so you have special insight to create your own music in the Phrygian mode. It's all based on a few simple patterns.

I first 'discovered' the Phrygian mode of C vy accident, before even knowing what modes were, by applying the W and H intervals of C Major in reverse.

Loved the tonality of course and when combined with the C Major itself you do get that beautiful flamenco vibe

I love the consistency in how you present your information. I'm going through all your videos about the modes and I like how you present the videos in the same format. It really allows the fundamentals to sink in, particularly with how you explain the tertiary links in the same exact way for each video

Before producing a song, is it wise to decide what mode I want to write in? How do I know which one to choose?

The Andalusian Cadence of Flamenco and other Spanish is Phrygian Dominant and there are numerous examples. Am G F E7 would be an example of the progression in E Phyrigian Dominant. The Tonic is E Dominant. You could have made more a mention of that. Otherwise great video.

Great video! May I ask, what software do you use to display the chords like you have here? What a useful visual!

Aha, never mind, looks like you said it at the end! I'll check out the diagrams.

11:00 What is that other video? I'm still confused on the relationship between scales in regards to how secondary dominants work.
