I'm happy for you guys. This is definitely one of the crucial points. You can go to any gym and still see beginners throwing themselves from leg to leg.

"pulling with the hamstrings" is something I've never heard before. Thanks for the tip, I'll start practicing it

I just had a pad session with my friend, we are both beginner level (a few years of boxing fitness classes, just started sparring) and we watched this video before our training. This tied together so, so much and resolved so many punching problems we both had especially when hooking. I'd say one of the biggest single step improvements in my game. Thanks Johnny, tons of respect mate!

Thanks, man! My trick for the leaping hooks is to load tension in legs and calves. It draws the attention downwards...whereas my upper body and arms are free to strike. If I carry the tension in the arms/fist, they always feel the punch coming.

Dude, I absolutely jive with Johnny and his theory of simplicity, like “less is more” mentality. And his technique works! And you can tell by his coaching style that he’s patient but you gotta come ready to work. He’s a straight shooter and won’t baby you to learn what he teaches. It’s like all you wanna know is there, you just gotta come hungry and ready to learn. It’s crazy, literally every channel explained weight shift the same way, just as Johnny did at the beginning of this vid. But none of them thought/taught outside the box. Johnny does and it makes total sense. But maybe all the other channels teach the same weight shift for beginners. I’m not sure

Yes it is. But it's also explained here as well. If you're looking for more advanced punching techniques, I highly recommend for you to look into my "Advanced Boxing Workshop".

Every fighter has different strategies and purposes for doing something. The important thing is to know that you have different tools for different situations. Understand that every tool has its advantages and disadvantages. Try using them in different situations and you will soon find out their effectiveness for your style.

You shouldn't really feel a stretch because your legs should be within their comfortable range of motion. There MAY be a slight twist on your front foot if you were pivoting it after a left hook. You do not dig into your front leg with the hips (according to this technique). The weight should be even. This video was meant to be more theoretical than technical. It's simply another way of looking at power punches.

Sure you can do that if you want but it will slow down your jab if you try to pivot with the jab. Also if you pivot with the jab, you lose the chance to follow your jab with a powerful left hook. You can do whatever you want but make sure you know the difference between a jab and a left cross.

Use both legs and both shoulders.... That should be common sense but I honestly never thought of it like that. This is very good information and great demonstration. You have a gift for teaching.

That pull with the hamstring sounds good. I tried your drop a hip video and it improved my punching, will try this one in 2-3 days in my next session.

The real trick is keeping your leg on two legs when one is disconnected from the ground. BUT even if you do lift one foot off the ground, you still have to keep it low to the ground that way you're as close to being 2-legged as possible and your body is still anchored to the ground at 2 points. If you lift one foot really high and then punch, it will feel like a one-legged punch.

I'm a beginner, and your videos has been very helpful.thank you!

Different techniques for different purposes. Sometimes it's more tactical to punch off one leg. But if you want to have maximum power, then you need to be on two legs.
