FINALLY! An EASY, Open-Source AMS?

Показать описание

Even before Bambu Lab came out with their AMS, the 3D printing community has wanted to create an open source multicolor type system for open source 3d printers like Voron and Klipper. Past attempts, such as the ERCF V2 (Enraged Rabbit Carrot Feeder) or Annex Engineering Tradrack have come close, but they've never QUITE been reliable enough to achieve mainstream adoption. Fortunately, this is the beauty of open source, and of the 3D printing community! Folks are always working to improve on the work of others.

So in this video, we're going to look into the Box Turtle Open Source AMS by Armored Turtle... an open source multicolor system for Voron and Klipper printers. I'll be building and testing this kit by LDO motors, to see if it lives up to the promise of being easier to use, easier to build, and more reliable than past systems.

Along the way, I'll help you understand if this is something YOU should take on for YOUR 3D printer... or if it's not quite there yet.

Let's get after it!

Thanks! Really appreciated the honesty review, and help the community to know what is LDO Box Turtle AFC Kit. 🎉

As a maker who has dabbled for a decade with 3D printing, I've honestly had enough "tinkering", but I can see the appeal of taking on yet another project. We now have affordable printers that have most of the features we, back in the day, had to manually add on to our Ender V3s, so the process of getting to the point of making good 3D prints is far easier, but there is always a new frontier, and MMUs are that frontier it seems. Personally, I'll buy something off the shelf, but I'm waiting for a reasonable multi-tool system so I don't have to deal with all the waste (poop).

I wish i could give this video more thumbs up 👍👍👍👍👍. You said what needed to be said to (and heard by) the community. With your open hardware and ERCF experience you're the right person to evaluate it. Thats why I've been awaiting *this* specific video since you first mentioned you were working on it. Now I have a better understanding of this 'rewarding project' also becoming a workhorse. Getting my running shoes ready!

Would love to see follow ups and a reaction to the heated enclosure option when available.

Thanks for the shoutout 😁 and can confirm- the documentation was just… *chef’s kiss* I’d honestly like to work on another project if it had documentation like that even if I didn’t need the product, just because of how pleasant it would be to do

There is also the Open AMS project that lets you convert a Bambu AMS to be useable with any Klipper printer as well. It replaces the motherboard of the AMS unit to convert it to USB so you can plug it into your Rpi. So that route is also doable for Vorons, but the Boxturtle really does fit the "theme" of the Voron Project printers, as I do love my 2.4 350.

I was THIS close from ordering the Box Turtle.. but Bondtech INDX was announced and that was my dream multi-filament setup to only swap the nozzle itself

I'm so excited to see this project. I have an X1cAMS at work and want an AMS more and more for my Voron at home.

This just gives me more appreciation for my AMS, which I wasn’t sure of purchasing first. People complain about Bambu not being open source, but look at all the engineering and troubleshooting that is needed to create a finished, polished product that works well.

And its not cheaper than most other multimaterial systems. I want to upgrade my k1 to multimaterial but the filament boxes all cost around 300eur sadly.

Seems like a much more reliable (simpler mechanically at very least) approach and far more like something I would look at picking up cause I like simple things.

This is great, this AMS is really cool. It's a bit out of my skill level but I appreciate the whole break down!

I am looking forward to seeing what more people think of this. I have a Qidi Plus 4 and their AMS isn't available yet.

This is fantastic nice work man.
I may try this out when it gets a bit more mature.
Sorry to see you felt you needed to leave x.

After seeing the new Prusa Core One, I've had this crazy idea of a Voron Trident with TWO internal spool holders, each of them implemented as a filament re-winder, and then adding the necessary box turtle bits to create a dual unit mmu. OK, this is only two colors (but more can be added externally), and two "colors" is enough for many prints (foreground/background, or lettering such a dreidel top) or different materials (but really not perfect here as incompatible materials would need huge amounts of waste pooping). Still, being able to fit a dual lane turtle inside of the printer sounds cool!

Formbot provides an option available for $179.99 plus shipping. Moreover, Box Turtle has introduced a mini version named the "Happy Turtle Lettuce Feeder, " which is likely to be more affordable compared to the current BT kits offered by LDO or Formbot.

I wish Bambu allowed the use of multiple printers with a single AMS. Like a Mini and A1 on a shared AMS
