We have seen a lot of people saying that Lelystad, a city in the Dutch province of Flevoland, is ugly. Possibly the ugliest city in all of The Netherlands. We travel from our home in Amsterdam to Lelystad to seek the truth!

✼ ABOUT US ✼
We are Nate and Katrina, two Americans living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and traveling as much as we can to see what there is to see! Call us expats, immigrants, whatever... just call us already.

We balance work life with travel... as best we can! We would love to visit every country in Europe while we live here, and definitely keep a list of our global “must visit” destinations.

We try to give you a true view of us and how we travel and explore the world. Lots of food, definitely some jokes, and probably some swearing…. Hope you enjoy taking these trips with us!

Ugly does not exist. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You can find everywhere beauty. It is your focus, your eye, and your mindset .

You didnt show us a lot of Lelystad, most of the video is about a shoppingmall and a fakeboat. I saw the agoraheatre, wich I like. And 3 seconds of a tiny part of the shoppingcentre. Its not a way to judge a city. Lelystad is also special for the way they seperated houses, traffic, mainroads and a tremendous amount of green (trees, water, space). Its not ugly at all, but just made for more people then eventually live there so hard to maintain.

It's really a battle between Lelystad and Almere for this title, strong competition. You guys should definitely check out Charleroi, Belgium as well, it was named the ugliest city in Europe; makes for a juicy video title.. As a palate cleanser you could then visit Dinant (not too far from Charleroi), one of the prettiest and most picturesque cities out there!

Ive lived in Lelystad all my life, and i will only leave if i can move abroad. Its a quit and mostly peacefull city. With lots of green and parks. But our local authority has messed a lot of things up over the years. And thats a shame....

I think that most Dutch people find a city ugly when it doesn't have real history. This goes for relatively young cities like Zoetermeer, Hoogeveen, Almere and Lelystad, the things which look old here are replicas like Batavia stad which was only built 23 years ago.
But this is also true for cities were the old city centres were heavily damaged or destroyed by the bombings in WW2 (Rotterdam, Heerlen), and remodelling by some brilliant urban planners in the 1960s who wanted to model these cities to the then popular modernist look with wide streets, vast open spaces and lots of ugly buildings, also the car had to have all the space possible during this era.

I'm from Lelystad, and that water is not the sea, it are all fresh water lakes. It used to be sea, but not anymore.

When I was born more than 70 years ago, Lelystad did not yet exist. So unlike many other Dutch cities it is very new and created on a blank sheet of paper.

Orange is also the name of the ruling House of the Dutch royal family (the name comes from a city that is now in France and also the last third of the flag of Ireland is for the Protestants who supported William of Orange who was king of England and the Netherlands — also the flag of New York City also has an orange stripe because it was New Amsterdam before it became New York City!).

As ugly as a city like Lelystad may be (de gustibus non est disputandem), as soon as Katrina comes to visit, it turns into Paris by night, New York in the spring. Lelystad was lucky that the weather was nice when you were there. Imagine it in rain and storm. I read somewhere that people in Lelystad (and Almere) are on average happier than people in Amsterdam. And that's not only because of the costs of living. Oh well: You hit the 5000 subscribers! Congratulations, well deserved. We couldn't have done it without you. Only 5000 more and we can watch you guys go skinnydipping in Het IJ. Whoop whoop!

Read: Peter Fitzsimon: Batavia Shiprwreck. Murder. Greed. Rape. Lust. Survival. Courage. Honour. Dishonour. Bravery. The story of the ship BATAVIA, wrecked off the WA coast in 1629, is arguably the greatest tale in Australias history.

Lived and worked in Lelystad for 15 years, and still think it is a unique place to live in the Netherlands. The Nature reserve and the water surrounding it is stunning 😎

I lived in Lelystad about 23 years, i really enjoyed it when my kids were small, it was always a peaceful place, i do not have a drivers license so it was a perfect city to live in with all the bicycle bridges, i was faster in the citycenter with my bicycle than with a car. Also the nature is beautiful. I loved going to the Natuurpark . Ugly no, but different yes.

I'm not a big fan of ketchup, because i'm from the south (Brabant) and here we usually use Curry (spiced ketchup) on our fries and hot snacks and maybe you could try it with a Tosti, because that's how i always eat them! 😋👍🏻
And i consider my own home town Eindhoven as the ugliest big city in the Netherlands, because it wasn't as severely bombed as Rotterdam in WW2 and it wasn't newly created like Lelystad, but purposely demolished sinds the 60's! 😪✌🏼

In my opinion Rotterdam an Amsterdam is most dirty and ugly in some part of the city, just look little bit out of Main Street and see it for your own self. I was been in most of biggest cities in Netherlands past couple years, and I can say they are most rotten cities afte all in my opinion.

I just found your site or I would have commented sooner. You visiting the Batavia, it’s a beautiful ship, I was there when they launched it as my cousin was friends with the person that build it. He had a latitude equipment build for it and also some cannon balls. They had a major fire at the wharf where they build the ship. Everything was hand build. Almere is also a quaint city. Thanks for your videos of the different cities, myself I’m originally from Rotterdam also a beautiful city, I now live in Canada since 1951.

Tosti without additional sauce(s), I agree, a good tosti does not need sauce.
It looks like the "exposed" statue is doing something that should not be exposed, or is that just me.
