As a lifelong resident of Hemel, I must say you brought a tear to my eye. I was standing just outside my apartment when I heard the plane coming over the horizon of buildings. I wasn't able to get it on camera because I don't actually live in Hemel and have never actually been, but I'll truly never forget this. Thank you.

No lie, Hemel Hempstead actually looks really nice. That said, being from the middle of nowhere US, most places in the UK look really nice in comparison. I might legitimately visit Hemel Hempstead for an afternoon if I ever get to travel to the UK.

After that ‘Crap Towns’ book was published (back in the early 00s), the authors received countless complaints from people incredulous about the omission of my birthplace, Luton. So many people, in fact, that Luton was named number 1 in the sequel: Britain’s 50 crappest towns.
