Had the kit bought as a birthday present. Struggled to create an ember until I cut my own narrower notch then it worked like a dream. Ember within seconds.

The ember pan gets put under the fire board...not the tender bundle! Putting the tinder bundle under the board does nothing but compress it, which is what you DON'T want. Also, you're not meant to just bow at full power from the start. You should be able to hold a conversation while the board is being warmed up. It's only at the last 20 or 30 seconds when you bow at full speed with high pressure. You'll wear yourself out operating it like he is. This is demonstrating VERY bad form.

Question. Since the handle has a bearing and lets it spin freely does it not get hot under your hand? seems to me like the handle is wood rubbing wood too and would try to start a fire there as well..lol

handle burnt through board before an ember not only that the slot for ember is to far foward as when you use it dust builds around hole not in slot, the handle gets toa point in one hole so have keep cutting it flat waste of money used vow drills a lot over years this might work with right woods and correctly cut slots but as it is nope not happening then spindle smokes longer than the dust does.

yes they are good but i love flint and steel. . its less physical effort . and i find flint and steel very easy.. i think it will be easy if you put the wooden bit a power drill you will get a ember in just 5 seconds . but thats just being silly . and you will not get the satisfaction

Oh, you really can't bust a bowdrill if you can't make your own set!

I suppose there's an ass for every seat, but I can't justify spending money on products that you'll find within a few yards of your camp. Instead, carry a dependable knife and a hank of cordage. Those will serve multiple functions instead of only one, & they take a fraction of space on your body. We need not bring sand to the beach.
