Thanks for your intro to PSKOOK. The thing that stands out about the company is that they are innovators, rather than copiers. They seem to be serious about outdoor craft and try new approaches. Since the necklace is, as you say, an emergency replacement, I think it would be a good way to carry a neck knife, for those who like those. More compact than the regular rod and striker that I have on mine.

It is good seeing you "out and about" and doing what you enjoy.

Thanks Mark for your videos!! I have 4 kids that loves the outdoors and every time we go out camping or just a hike for the day I always try to teach them at least one thing about Bushcraft. And the one thing they (all 4) hate is the bow drill!!!! And this product is right up their ally. Per-made and easy to use and that they can just work on their technic and not about the right wood, the thickness, length of the bow and so on, just on their technic and that's a big plus for their selfesteem to use the bow and drill to make a fire on their own!!! Thanks for sharing the product and the Keep up your great job you do for us that needs a little help!!!

You make me feel so safe; you have such a soothing way. Thank you for this vid. I practice all my outdoor skills even the ones I learned as a child EXCEPT the bow drill. I hated it as a kid and just kept ignoring it whenever it was around. Thank you for giving me that little push to get out and start working on this skill after so many years of avoiding it.

Agree with all your observations. I too picked this up to help me learn the bow drilll technique and it has moved my skill level up 4 floors from the basement. Fact is I had 2 attempts to create an ember with no success but by watching your montage I think I get where I need improvement. One failing of the kit, which you have solved, is explaining how it works because as you know there are 0 instructions with the kit. All the best..

You can also keyhole and 'reuse' the already used holes to catch the ember

Thanks, Mark. I enjoy your videos, and have been watching them for several months. Please forgive my fire starting suggestions if you already are aware of the following, but I have been captivated by two methods I would like to share: the fire piston and the fire roll.

The fire piston works similar to a diesel engine to ignite char cloth by compressing air in a small tube. According to Google, it was a fairly common technique prior to the invention of the sulphur match (but I was unaware of the technique). You can find many recent examples of fire pistons on YouTube, and I have been successful in making and using fire pistons small enough to fit in a pocket-size metal box. It did take me some effort and practice before I convinced myself that it is a viable fire starting method (but it is really interesting).

The fire roll (or Rudiger roll) is my current favorite technique. It is easy, works with natural materials, and is reliable. YouTube video makers Boggy Creek Beast and David West have published mutiple examples of how to make and use fire rolls with a variety of natural fiberous materials. I was captivated by the concept, so I tried it with a cotton ball--and it worked the first time I tried. I tightly rolled up half of a cotton ball with some wood ashes (makes it work better), and then rolled the resulting cotton/ashes roll between two boards as I had seen demonstrated on YouTube. In about 15 seconds I had an ember that was relatively long lasting and burned hot. Apparently, many natural fiber materials (cotton, jute, bark, etc.) can be used with almost any flat surfaces, including a split branch or flat rocks. Boggy Creek Beast demonstrated a pocket size version using two small pieces of wood. Anyway, I found it fascinating and a viable alternative to all other fire starting techniques I have tried. Knowing the technique, one could use it without carrying any materials (since all you need are natural fibers and flat surfaces--the wood ashes just improve the result). Check it out on YouTube and give it a try. I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Thanks again for your videos--keep them coming.

Hi Mark. Well, you have done it again. I'm going to have to try this bow drill and develop some skill. I know there are a lot of vids on this subject, but I wish you had mentioned what materials found in nature are best used for a bushcraft bow drill. I'd much rather learn from you. You just seem to teach the way I need. Thanks for sharing.

Very interesting Mark, as you stated good to help people in gaining better technique and success with a bow drill. That must be some real soft wood to have burned through that quickly !. Thanks for shraring

i bought this about a week before i saw this video from amazon. i was able to get a fire the first time and after trying many many times with wood from around my house. i think the wood i was using was to hard. this wood is very soft and i think the key to bow drill.
