I feel there are so many factors such as your hips could be set in your sockets to where sumo is simply easier for you go get Into proper alignment without sacrificing your back and vice versa. Another factor is learning the motor movement pattern with your brain and movement pathway developed through repetition that if you practiced conventional and not sumo you'd naturally be weaker having not established the banked movement pattern with your "mind muscle connection" also vice versa. Another factor can be what is your more dominant muscle groups or maybe your lacking groups but I feel this is the less of all factors but one that is a contributing factor. In the end you should do whichever you feel is best for yourself in terms of safety because if you're injured you're not lifting period and hurts to see those gains slip away and what you notice you see the most gains with. Moving the weight just for ego isn't why I lift but to fully control it to build that power and muscle is why. It's my therapy but to each thier own. Just get your ass in the gym and build the best you that you can IMO.

As someone who conventional deadlifts twice a week I'm going to alternate one of those sessions to sumo now and see if I notice improvement in how much weight I can lift.

Love the comparison!! Never tried sumo but you make it look so easy lol. Good to see us regular folk trying it too ;)

Great coaching on form too Matt. Every one of those lifts was safe and tight. Not bad for those first timers. Nice one.

You cannot really compare the two lifts, as the Sumo recruits greater emphasis on the quads and glutes. Whilst the conventional, greater activation of the hamstrings and erector spinae. Sumo could be considered less challenging, less strain on the lumbar spine and a safer lift. I personally would do a combination of Sumo and RDL’s vs a conventional deadlift.

Really enjoyed helping Matt in this vid. Great guy & gave me some good tips for my sumo

Technically if someone can lift more sumo and uses the sumo stance technically conventional should get a point because it proves they have to use less range of motion to get the bar up when conventional takes more motion which means it's harder

Quite often people were failing on the second max rep attempt, irrelevant of the form. Not a particularly a fair test whether you are pro conventional or sumo

It's so hard to tell because if you've been doing one way for a long time the other way feels strange anyway, I can pull 150kg conventional but only 90kg sumo because I'm not used to it 😅

don't understand the scoring though. If the conventional was a harder lift like, not able to be pulled, sumo got a point and vice versa??

Great video! I (slightly reluctantly) switched to sumo a while ago. Matt's assessment about it putting less strain on your lumbar spine is absolutely true in my case. That said, conventional looks cooler...(unless we're talking about Stefi Cohen, of course).

🏋️‍♂️ I discovered sumo deadlifting after I started watching your channel about 5 years ago. I had quit deadlifting all together because I kept injuring my lower back (crooked spine). 🩻 Started trying the sumo with only 115lbs about 3 years ago and now I can do 315x10 no problem! 💪 Thx, Matt! 👏

for a guy who has a 38 inch inside leg, i find sumo much more comfortable to do but ive never done a test to compare which one i could lift heavier on

thanks for doing this bro
